LG Washer dE: The Door Will Not Lock
dE means the door lock assembly did not achieve the locked state within the timeout after you pressed Start. LG front-load washers use a motorized lock mechanism that physically slides a metal bolt into the door striker when a cycle starts. The board verifies lock engagement through a switch before allowing the drum to fill or spin. If the switch never confirms locked position, dE appears.
Quick Check: Is Something In the Way?
Before diagnosing the lock mechanism, check the door opening area. Small items — a sock, washcloth, or piece of clothing — can get pinched between the door and the rubber boot seal, preventing the door from closing fully. The door appears closed but the striker does not reach the lock bolt because the door is held open 2-3mm by the trapped fabric.
Open the door. Check the entire perimeter of the boot seal for trapped items. Close the door firmly. Listen for the lock motor engaging (a motorized clicking sound for 2-3 seconds). If you hear the lock motor and dE clears, the door was not fully closed.

How the LG Washer Door Lock Works
The lock assembly contains three functional elements:
- Lock motor: A small geared motor that drives the bolt into the striker hole in the door hook
- Lock switch: A microswitch that confirms the bolt reached full engagement
- Door switch: A separate switch confirming the door is physically closed (hook engaged in the assembly)
dE can trigger from any of these failing: motor not driving the bolt, bolt reaching position but switch not confirming, or door not closed enough for the hook to engage.
Diagnosing dE
The Door Lock Assembly (50%)
The lock motor or its internal gear train has failed. The door closes, the hook engages, but the bolt does not slide.
Listen: Start a cycle. Put your ear near the door lock area (front-right on most LG front-loaders). You should hear a motorized clicking/whirring for 2-3 seconds as the bolt extends. Silence = motor dead. Grinding = stripped gears. Brief click then stop = motor trying but mechanically blocked.
Test: Unplug the washer. Remove the front panel (screws along bottom edge, tilt panel out). The lock assembly mounts to the front panel near the door opening. Disconnect the multi-pin connector. Apply 120VAC to the motor pins (consult the wiring diagram for pin identification) — the motor should drive the bolt. No movement = replace the lock assembly.
Door Hinge Sag (25%)
Front-load washer doors are heavy (glass window + frame). After years of opening/closing, the hinges can sag slightly. This misalignment moves the door hook out of position relative to the lock assembly. The hook does not reach far enough into the assembly to engage the lock bolt.
Test: With the door closed, try pushing the door inward firmly at the handle side. If dE clears with extra pressure, the hinge has sagged. Adjust or replace the hinge ($20-40).
Lock Switch Failure (15%)
The lock motor drives the bolt successfully but the confirmation switch does not register. The bolt is locked but the board does not know it.
Test: If you hear the lock motor complete its cycle and the bolt appears to be in position (visible through the gap or by feel), but dE persists, the switch inside the assembly has failed. Replace the lock assembly (the switch is not serviceable separately on most LG models).
Wiring Harness (10%)
The multi-pin connector between the lock assembly and the main board can develop corroded or loose pins. Inspect the connector for corrosion, bent pins, or loose wires.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Lock Assembly Replacement
- Unplug the washer
- Open the door. Peel back the front of the boot seal to expose the wire retaining ring. Remove the ring (spring clamp — use a flat screwdriver to unhook)
- Pull the boot seal away from the front panel around the lock area
- Remove the front panel screws (bottom edge, typically 3-4 Torx screws). Tilt the panel forward
- The lock assembly is on the right side, bolted to the panel with 2 screws
- Disconnect the multi-pin electrical connector
- Remove the 2 mounting screws. Pull the old assembly out
- Install the new lock assembly (EBF49827803 or model-specific, $30-60). Mount, connect, reassemble
- Test: the door should lock within 3 seconds of pressing Start

dE During a Running Cycle
If dE appears mid-cycle and the washer stops with water inside, the lock bolt retracted while the machine was running. This is a safety function — the washer will not spin with an unlocked door. Do not attempt to open the door if you see water above the glass. Run a drain/spin cycle first. If dE prevents even draining, use the emergency drain procedure (pull the small drain hose behind the lower kick panel).
