LG Washer AE: Water Reached the Base Pan
AE means the Aqua Lock leak detection float switch in the washer's base pan activated. Water leaked from somewhere inside the machine and accumulated below the outer tub. The washer immediately stops all operation and runs the drain pump continuously to evacuate leaked water.
Immediate Action
Unplug the washer. Close the hot and cold supply valves behind the machine. Place towels around the base. AE with a running washer means active leaking — stopping the water supply prevents further flooding.

Finding the Leak Source
Pull the washer forward on towels. The leak source determines the repair.
Tub-to-Pump Hose (30%)
The short rubber hose connecting the outer tub sump to the drain pump housing is the most common leak source on front-load LG washers. Spring-type hose clamps loosen over years of vibration. The rubber degrades from detergent and heat exposure, developing hairline cracks at the ends where the clamp compresses it.
Inspect from below with the washer tilted back — look for wetness or mineral trails at both ends of the sump hose.
Door Boot Seal (25%)
The large rubber bellows (door boot) connecting the tub opening to the door frame develops tears from foreign objects (coins, underwire, zippers) being trapped in its folds. Small tears leak only during the wash or spin phase when water rises against the damaged area.
Inspect the entire inner surface of the boot — fold back the front lip and look for cuts, punctures, or areas where the rubber has thinned. Pay special attention to the bottom fold where debris collects.
Inlet Valve or Hoses (20%)
The fill hoses at the rear or the inlet valve body itself can leak. Hose connections may work loose from vibration. The valve body can crack from a pressure surge or freezing.
Tub Seal (Bearing Seal) (15%)
The main shaft seal between the outer tub and the inner drum prevents water from passing through the bearing housing. When this seal fails, water drips from the tub center onto the motor and frame below. This is a major repair — it requires removing the outer tub and inner drum to access the seal and bearings. If the bearings are also worn (grinding noise during spin), replace bearings and seal together.
Detergent Dispenser Housing (10%)
The dispenser drawer housing connects to the tub via a rubber hose. If this hose disconnects or cracks, water flows from the dispenser into the base pan rather than into the tub during the fill phase.

Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Inverter Direct Drive and AE
LG's Inverter Direct Drive motor mounts directly to the rear of the outer tub. If the tub seal leaks, water drips directly onto the motor assembly — causing potential motor damage if AE is ignored for weeks. The Direct Drive motor has no belt to protect it from water; the motor stator sits exposed on the tub back. Address AE promptly to avoid escalation from a $40 seal to a $200+ motor replacement.

After Fixing the Leak
Dry the base pan completely before plugging in. Even a small amount of residual water keeps the float switch raised, causing AE to persist after the leak is repaired. Use towels and a hair dryer on the base pan. Allow 30 minutes of air drying before testing.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

AE vs. OE
AE is leaked water in the base pan (water went where it should not). OE is water not draining from the tub (water stayed where it should not). Both involve water problems but in opposite locations. AE triggers the flood protection circuit; OE triggers the drain failure circuit.
