LG Microwave Door Latch Replacement — The Triple Interlock System
LG microwave door latches are far more than simple catches. The door assembly contains three interlock switches that must all close in the correct sequence before the magnetron can operate. This triple-redundant safety system is required by UL standards and is the most safety-critical component in the microwave. When any part of the latch mechanism fails, the microwave either will not start at all or blows its internal fuse.
How the Triple Interlock Works
Primary switch: Closes first when the door is pushed shut. Connects the power circuit to the magnetron.
Secondary switch: Closes after the primary. Provides redundant confirmation that the door is sealed.
Monitor switch (short switch): This is the critical safety component that confuses people. The monitor switch is normally closed when the door is open. When the door closes, it opens. If the primary or secondary switch fails to open when the door opens, the monitor switch deliberately creates a short circuit that blows the fuse — preventing microwave radiation from escaping through an improperly latched door.
This is why a failed door switch often blows the microwave fuse. The monitor switch is doing its job — sacrificing the fuse to prevent a much more dangerous failure.

Symptoms of Door Latch Failure
- Microwave completely dead, fuse blown — a door switch failed and the monitor switch blew the fuse as designed
- Microwave works but will not start a cook cycle — one interlock switch is not closing properly
- Door does not latch closed — the spring hook or catch mechanism is broken
- Door requires slamming to engage — the latch hooks are worn or the spring has weakened
- Microwave starts then stops when you release the door handle — intermittent switch contact

Tools Required
- Phillips #2 — for cabinet removal
- Insulated screwdriver — for capacitor discharge
- Multimeter — for testing each switch individually
- Needle-nose pliers — for spring hook installation
Safety Warning
Microwave repair requires opening the cabinet, which exposes the high-voltage capacitor. Discharge the capacitor before touching any component. This is not optional.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

Testing the Door Switches
With the microwave unplugged and capacitor discharged, access the door switches behind the front panel. Each switch has two terminals. Test each for continuity in both the pressed and released positions. The primary and secondary switches should show continuity when pressed (door closed). The monitor switch should show continuity when released (door open) and open when pressed (door closed).

Latch Hook Replacement
The door latch hooks are plastic or metal fingers that engage the switch plungers through the cabinet front. When a hook breaks, the corresponding switch does not close. Replacement hooks are often sold as a set. The hooks are mounted inside the door with Phillips screws or snap-fit clips.

Why the Fuse Blows
If you have replaced the fuse but it blows again immediately when you close the door, a door switch has failed in the closed position — it stays closed even when the door opens, so the monitor switch blows the fuse. Replace all three door switches before installing a new fuse. Using a higher-amperage fuse is extremely dangerous and defeats the safety system.
Frequently Asked Questions
My LG microwave blew a fuse. Is it the door latch?
Very likely. The monitor switch blows the fuse when a primary or secondary door switch fails. Replace all three switches ($5-$15 each) and the fuse ($3-$8). Never install a higher-amperage fuse.
Can I replace just one door switch on my LG microwave?
You can, but since all three switches are the same age and the labor to access them is identical, replacing all three is standard practice. A set of three switches costs $15-$45.
Is microwave door latch replacement a DIY job?
Only if you are experienced with high-voltage electronics. The capacitor stores a lethal charge. If you are comfortable discharging a capacitor and working near high-voltage components, the switch swap itself is simple.
