LG Dryer Making Noise — Troubleshooting Guide
LG dryers are designed for quiet operation, but mechanical wear produces distinctive sounds that can be diagnosed by their character and timing. Unlike LG washers (which use Direct Drive with no belt), LG dryers use a conventional belt-and-pulley system to spin the drum. This means dryer noise sources include drum rollers, the idler pulley, the belt itself, and the motor bearings — components that LG washers do not have.
This guide covers noise diagnosis specific to LG DLEX/DLE (electric) and DLGX/DLG (gas) dryers based on our Sacramento-area repair data.
Sound Identification
- Squealing/screeching — belt glazing on drum surface, idler pulley bearing failure, or motor pulley friction.
- Thumping at drum speed — flat spot on a drum roller, foreign object on drum surface, or wrinkled drum seal.
- Grinding — drum roller bearing failure (metal-on-metal).
- Rattling/clicking — loose object inside drum, broken baffle, or blower wheel contact.
- Humming without tumbling — motor runs but belt broken (drum does not turn).

Most Common Causes
1. Drum Support Rollers (32% of cases)
LG dryers use 2-4 drum support rollers (small wheels) that the drum rides on at the rear. Each roller has a shaft and bearing. When the bearing wears, the roller develops a flat spot or wobble, creating a rhythmic thumping at drum-rotation speed.
Diagnosis: Open the door, reach in, and rotate the drum by hand. Thump-thump-thump at regular intervals = roller issue. With the dryer running, the thumping matches the drum rotation speed (approximately one revolution per second).
DIY Difficulty: Moderate (requires drum removal) Parts Cost: $20–$50 (roller kit with shaft) Professional Repair Cost: $150–$280
Repair Steps:
- Unplug dryer.
- Remove top panel (screws at rear lip), then front panel (2 screws at top under top panel, release lower clips).
- Note the belt routing around the drum and through the idler pulley.
- Release belt tension by pushing the idler pulley and slipping the belt off the motor pulley.
- Lift the drum out through the front opening.
- The rear rollers are now exposed — snap off the retaining clip, pull old roller and shaft, install new set.
- Reassemble: drum back in, route belt around drum (grooved side against drum), through idler pulley, and around motor pulley.
2. Idler Pulley (24% of cases)
The idler pulley is a spring-loaded wheel that maintains tension on the drum belt. When its bearing wears, it produces a high-pitched squeal that intensifies as belt tension increases under load.
Diagnosis: The squeal is constant when the dryer runs and may change pitch slightly. With the dryer off, you can sometimes feel the worn bearing by spinning the pulley by hand — it should spin smoothly.
DIY Difficulty: Moderate Parts Cost: $10–$30 Professional Repair Cost: $120–$220
3. Drum Belt Wear (16% of cases)
The flat multi-rib belt stretches and glazes over time. A glazed belt slips on the drum surface, producing a squealing sound — usually louder when the dryer first starts and the drum is loaded with heavy, wet clothes.
Diagnosis: If the squeal is loudest at startup and fades as clothes lighten (heat drying), the belt is slipping under initial load.
DIY Difficulty: Moderate Parts Cost: $10–$25 Professional Repair Cost: $100–$200
4. Drum Seal/Felt Wear (12% of cases)
Felt strips or rubber seals at the front and rear drum openings prevent hot air leakage and provide smooth drum rotation. When they wear through, metal-to-metal contact between drum edge and bulkhead produces a scraping or squealing noise.
Diagnosis: Open the door and look at the felt/seal around the drum opening edges. Shiny metal contact marks or missing felt sections confirm the issue.
DIY Difficulty: Moderate Parts Cost: $15–$40 Professional Repair Cost: $120–$240
5. Motor Bearings (8% of cases)
The dryer motor has sleeve bearings that wear over time. A failing motor bearing produces a low-pitched rumbling or humming that is constant regardless of drum load. In advanced stages, the motor may squeal or seize intermittently.
Parts Cost: $80–$180 Professional Repair Cost: $200–$380
6. Blower Wheel Obstruction (5% of cases)
The blower wheel (inside the blower housing) draws air through the drum and pushes it through the exhaust duct. Lint, small garments, or debris can enter the blower housing and contact the spinning wheel, creating a flapping or clicking noise.
On LG dryers, the blower is accessed from the front bottom or by removing the drum. Clean the blower housing and inspect the wheel for cracks.
DIY Difficulty: Moderate Parts Cost: $0 (cleaning) to $25 (new blower wheel) Professional Repair Cost: $100–$200
7. Loose or Broken Drum Baffle (3% of cases)
The plastic baffles (lifters) inside the drum can crack or loosen from their rivets, creating a rattling or clicking as they flex with drum rotation.
DIY Difficulty: Easy Parts Cost: $10–$25 Professional Repair Cost: $80–$160
LG EasyLoad Door Consideration
LG dryers with the EasyLoad door (dual-opening) have additional hinge mechanisms. If the door hinges wear, they can produce clicking or creaking sounds during operation as vibration affects the door.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Sensor Dry and Noise
If the Sensor Dry bars (inside the drum near the lint screen) accumulate fabric softener residue, they may cause the dryer to run longer than necessary — which means more wear on rollers, bearings, and belt per cycle. Clean with rubbing alcohol monthly to ensure accurate cycle lengths.

Diagnostic Sequence
- Empty drum test — run the dryer empty. If noise persists, it is mechanical (not caused by items in the drum).
- Manual drum rotation — open door, spin drum by hand. Listen and feel for thumping, grinding, or catching.
- Identify noise timing — constant = motor or idler bearing. Rhythmic with drum = rollers. At startup only = belt slipping.
- Open panels — remove top panel and inspect belt, idler, and visible rollers.
- ThinQ Smart Diagnosis — run diagnosis if available. The app can detect motor current anomalies indicating bearing drag.
The Real Cost of DIY

Prevention Tips
- Clean lint screen before every load — reduces heat and stress on all moving parts.
- Clean vent annually — restricted airflow makes the motor work harder, accelerating bearing wear.
- Do not overload — heavy loads strain the belt, rollers, and motor.
- Wipe Sensor Dry bars monthly — prevents unnecessarily long cycles.
- Replace rollers, idler, and belt as a set — if one roller has failed, the others are near end-of-life too. Replacing all moving parts at once saves a repeat service call.
FAQ
Q: Should I replace just one drum roller or all of them?
Replace all rollers as a set. They wear at similar rates, and a new roller with worn partners creates uneven drum support. The labor to access the rollers is the expensive part — the parts themselves are cheap.
Q: Will noise damage my LG dryer if I keep using it?
A worn idler pulley or roller that continues to deteriorate can seize entirely, which snaps the belt. A broken belt stops the drum immediately. More seriously, a seized motor bearing can overheat and create a fire risk. Address noise promptly.
Q: My LG dryer squeals only when cold and stops after warming up — is that normal?
A brief squeal in the first 30-60 seconds that disappears as components warm up is marginal — the idler pulley or belt is at the beginning of its failure curve. Plan replacement within 2-3 months.
