LG Dryer Motor Replacement — Direct Drive and the 10-Year Warranty
LG dryer motors come in two configurations depending on the model era: conventional belt-driven motors and the newer Direct Drive motors. The belt-driven design uses a drum belt and idler pulley to transfer motor rotation to the drum. The Direct Drive design (found in newer models and WashTower units) eliminates the belt by coupling the motor directly to the drum through a clutch mechanism.
Both types are covered by LG's 10-year parts warranty on the motor — but the labor warranty is only 1 year. This means if your motor fails in year 3, LG will provide the motor for free but you pay for the technician.
Symptoms of Motor Failure
- Dryer hums but drum does not turn — the motor is trying to start but cannot. Common causes: seized bearings, failed start winding, or a jammed blower wheel preventing rotation
- Motor starts then stops after a few seconds — thermal overload is tripping. The motor is overheating, usually from worn bearings or restricted airflow
- Burning smell from the rear of the dryer — motor windings are overheating or have shorted
- Loud grinding noise during tumbling — motor bearings are failing
- Complete silence when the dryer should be running — motor windings are open, no attempt to start

Before Replacing the Motor
A humming motor that will not spin is often a mechanical jam, not a dead motor. Check:
- Drum belt — if the belt broke, the motor spins freely but cannot turn the drum. The dryer will hum because the motor tries to start against no load and the centrifugal switch does not engage properly.
- Blower wheel — a foreign object jammed in the blower prevents the motor from spinning. Clear the obstruction.
- Idler pulley — a seized pulley locks the belt and stalls the motor.
- Thermal overload — the motor has a built-in thermal overload that trips when overheated. Let the dryer cool for 30 minutes. If it starts after cooling, the overload tripped from an overheating condition (usually a clogged vent).

Replacement Procedure
Disconnect power (240V for electric, 120V + gas shutoff for gas). Full disassembly is required: remove top panel, front panel, drum belt, drum, and blower wheel. The motor mounts to the motor bracket with 2-3 bolts accessible from inside the cabinet.
Disconnect the motor wiring harness. Remove the mounting bolts. Remove the blower wheel from the old motor shaft (held by a clamp — hold the shaft with pliers while loosening). Transfer the blower wheel to the new motor. Mount the new motor, reconnect wiring, reassemble everything in reverse.
Reinstall the belt around the drum and idler pulley. Verify the belt is properly seated before running. Test with a timed dry cycle.
Lifespan and Prevention
LG dryer motors typically last 12-18 years. The most common cause of premature failure is exhaust vent restriction — a clogged vent forces the motor to work harder and run hotter. Annual vent cleaning extends motor life. Also, avoid overloading the drum — excessive weight strains the motor bearings.
Don't Void Your Warranty

Frequently Asked Questions
My LG dryer hums but the drum does not turn. Is the motor dead?
Not necessarily. Check for a broken belt, jammed blower wheel, or seized idler pulley first. If the motor is hot, let it cool for 30 minutes — the thermal overload may have tripped. If it restarts after cooling, find the overheating cause (usually a clogged vent).
Is the LG dryer motor covered by the 10-year warranty?
Yes — 10 years parts warranty on the motor. Labor is covered for 1 year only. Contact LG with proof of purchase to claim the warranty motor.
Can I replace just the motor bearings instead of the whole motor?
LG dryer motors are sealed units — the bearings are not designed to be individually replaced. If the bearings are bad, replace the entire motor assembly. The 10-year warranty makes this less painful financially.
