LG Dishwasher Making Noise — Inverter Direct Drive Sound Diagnosis
LG dishwashers are engineered to be among the quietest on the market, with their LoDecibel rating often reaching as low as 42 dBA — significantly quieter than the industry average of 50+ dBA. This exceptional quietness is achieved through LG's Inverter Direct Drive motor technology (which eliminates the belt-driven motor assemblies that generate mechanical noise in conventional dishwashers) combined with thick sound-dampening insulation lining the tub walls and door interior. When an LG dishwasher that previously operated near-silently begins producing audible noise, it signals a meaningful change in mechanical condition rather than the gradual wear you might tolerate on a noisier machine.
Because LG's baseline noise level is so low, any new sound stands out dramatically. A noise that might go unnoticed on a 52 dBA dishwasher becomes immediately apparent on a unit designed to operate at 42-44 dBA. Understanding which sounds are normal for LG's unique architecture versus which indicate developing problems helps you determine urgency.
Normal Operating Sounds on LG Dishwashers
Before diagnosing a problem, confirm the sound is actually abnormal:
QuadWash arm rotation clicks (normal): LG's four spray arms rotate in a multi-motion pattern. The arms change direction periodically, producing a soft clicking at each reversal point. This is the pivot mechanism engaging and is by design.
Inverter Direct Drive motor hum (normal): Unlike belt-driven motors that produce a constant drone, the Inverter Direct Drive creates a variable-speed electronic hum that changes pitch as the motor adjusts RPM for different wash phases. Speed transitions sound like the motor speeding up or slowing down with corresponding pitch changes.
Dynamic Dry door-crack mechanism (normal on LDT models): Near cycle end, a mechanical actuator cracks the door open slightly for air circulation drying. This produces a single thunk or click sound.
Water inlet fill sound (normal): A brief buzzing during fill when the solenoid valve (5220FR2006H) opens. Lasts 1-2 minutes during each fill phase.
Drain pump operation (normal): Higher-pitched whirring lasting 2-3 minutes during each drain phase. Distinct from the main wash motor sound.

Abnormal Sounds and Their Causes
Grinding or Crunching During Wash Cycles
Cause: Foreign object in the impeller area. Because LG's Inverter Direct Drive motor directly drives the circulation pump impeller without any belt coupling or clutch, any debris that reaches the impeller is ground directly between the rotating element and the pump housing.
Common objects on LG models:
- EasyRack Plus plastic tine clips that snapped off and fell through the filter mesh
- Broken glass fragments from QuadWash high-pressure spray impacting thin stemware
- Bone fragments or fruit pits that bypassed the pull-up filter
- Sticker/label adhesive forming a mass on the impeller
Diagnosis:
- Stop the cycle immediately (grinding accelerates damage to the impeller and motor)
- Remove the lower rack
- Pull the filter assembly straight up (LG's pull-up design, no twisting)
- Reach into the sump area and attempt to rotate the impeller by hand
- Feel for resistance, catch points, or loose debris
- Remove the lower spray arm (clockwise turn, reverse thread) for better access to the impeller chamber
Continuous Humming Without Water Circulation
Cause: The Inverter Direct Drive motor is energized but the impeller is jammed. The motor draws current and generates electromagnetic hum without rotating. If this persists, the motor will overheat and error code LE (motor locked) will appear.
LG-specific aspect: On belt-driven dishwashers, a jammed impeller simply stalls the belt (which slips). On LG's direct-drive system, the motor is rigidly coupled — a jam means the motor stalls completely, drawing locked-rotor current that rapidly overheats the stator windings.
Immediate action: Power off the unit. A stalled Inverter Direct Drive motor can overheat in under 2 minutes of locked-rotor operation, potentially causing permanent winding damage.
Rattling or Vibrating During High-Speed Wash
Cause: Loose spray arm, displaced rack component, or unbalanced impeller.
QuadWash-specific rattle: The four spray arms have pivot joints that allow multi-directional water delivery. When these pivot bushings wear, the arms develop play that produces a rattling sound at higher motor speeds. The lower arm connection (reverse thread nut) can also loosen over time.
Diagnostic approach:
- Open the door and manually wiggle each spray arm — excessive play indicates worn bushings
- Check the lower arm mounting nut — it should be finger-tight with no wobble
- Verify EasyRack Plus components are all seated properly — loose rack elements rattle
- Run the unit with the upper rack removed, then with the lower rack removed, to isolate which level produces the noise
High-Pitched Whining or Squealing
Cause: Bearing failure in either the main circulation pump (Inverter Direct Drive motor bearings) or the drain pump (4681EA2001T bearings).
Differentiating which pump: The main motor runs during wash phases (when you hear water circulating). The drain pump runs during drain phases (no circulation sound, water evacuating). Note which operation phase produces the squeal:
- During washing = main motor bearings
- During draining = drain pump bearings
- During both = less likely both; recheck timing
LG motor bearing design: The Inverter Direct Drive uses sealed ball bearings that are not individually serviceable. Bearing failure requires complete motor assembly replacement. The drain pump bearings are also sealed — the entire pump (4681EA2001T) is replaced as a unit.
Banging or Knocking During Drain
Cause: Check valve malfunction or drain pump impeller hitting debris intermittently. LG dishwashers incorporate a check valve in the drain path to prevent backflow from the sink drain. If this valve becomes dislodged or its flapper breaks, it knocks against the housing during pump operation.
Also check: The drain hose routing. LG requires a high-loop or air-gap installation. If the hose sags, water from the sink can siphon back, and when the drain pump activates, it hits this standing water column with a hammer effect.
Using Smart Diagnosis for Noise Issues
LG's Smart Diagnosis can detect motor anomalies before they become audible:
- Open ThinQ app → Select dishwasher → Smart Diagnosis
- The system analyzes motor current waveform patterns
- Bearing wear creates current fluctuations detectable before audible noise develops
- The diagnostic report may identify motor health percentage or flag early-stage wear
For audio-based diagnosis: Call 1-800-243-0000, hold the Temp button, place phone speaker near the Power button area. The transmitted signals include motor operational data.

Prevention
- Clean the pull-up filter weekly to prevent debris from reaching the impeller
- Inspect EasyRack Plus clips quarterly — replace brittle clips before they snap into the tub
- Rinse dishes to remove bone fragments and fruit pits before loading
- Avoid placing thin stemware where QuadWash high-pressure zones can stress it
- Monthly Smart Diagnosis via ThinQ catches bearing wear before it produces noise
