Working Each Cause#
Turbidity sensor. The turbidity sensor (LG calls it the OWI, optical water indicator) sits in the sump and reads how dirty the water is; when the lens films over with grease or hard-water scale it reports "still dirty" forever and the board refuses to advance. In hard-water areas this is the single most common stall. LG's pull-up filter design exposes the sensor whenever the filter comes out, so food lands right on the lens. Enter the sensor test by holding Rinse + Spray for three seconds and watch the turbidity reading — high with clean water in the tub confirms fouling. Pull the lower rack, lift the filter straight out, wipe the small optical window with a cloth and white vinegar, and re-test before condemning the part.
Drain pump. Every wash-to-rinse handoff needs the drain pump (LG 4681EA2001T) to pull the water down. If it stalls, the board sees the level hasn't dropped and halts, usually flashing code OE. On Inverter Direct Drive units the wash motor and drain pump are separate assemblies, so the wash phases can run perfectly while every drain transition fails. Pull the kick panel (four Phillips screws), disconnect the drain hose, and check the impeller — broken stemware glass, a stray rack-tine clip, or a fruit-pit fragment jamming the impeller is the usual find.
Control board. LG boards track cycle position in memory, and a brownout or surge mid-cycle can corrupt that register with no visible code — the panel looks alive but makes no progress. Try the LG hard reset: power off, kill the breaker for a full five minutes (LG boards hold a charge longer than most), then start a fresh cycle. Inlet valve and door latch. The inlet valve (5220FR2006H) has a fixed fill window; a sediment-clogged inlet screen lets water in too slowly and trips code IE. The classic test: press firmly on the door near the latch during a run, and if the cycle resumes under pressure, the latch switch is the fault.

Why Hard Water Makes This Worse#
In a hard-water area the turbidity sensor and the inlet screen both suffer faster, which is why the same LG dishwasher can stall over and over. Mineral scale films the optical lens so it reads dirty sooner, and the same scale narrows the inlet screen so fills run long and trip code IE. Repair Walkthroughs#
Clean or replace the turbidity sensor:
- Pull the lower rack and lift the filter assembly straight up — LG uses a no-twist pull-up filter.
- Find the small optical window near the filter housing in the sump.
- Wipe the lens with a soft cloth and white vinegar to cut grease and scale, then reseat the filter and run the sensor test again.
- If the reading stays high with clean water, replace the sensor — a meter should show its resistance shift measurably between clear and cloudy water.
Clear the drain pump:
- Power off and remove the kick panel — four Phillips screws across the bottom front.
- Find the drain pump at the lowest point; it has two wires and a ribbed hose.
- Pull the drain hose and check for a clog, then reach the impeller through the sump access inside the tub and free any glass, tine clip, or pit fragment.
- Spin the impeller by hand — it should turn freely with no grinding — then reassemble and run a rinse to confirm it drains.
Clean the inlet-valve screen:
- Shut the household supply and open the lower-left panel to reach the inlet valve.
- Disconnect the supply line and pull the built-in mesh screen.
- Rinse the sediment out — the screen isn't sold separately, so clean it in place — and reconnect. A slow fill that tripped code IE usually clears here.
