The Main Causes#
Inverter Direct Drive motor overload (most common). Eliminating the belt put more thermal stress straight on the motor windings, so when the impeller jams — broken glass, a bone fragment, or a snapped EasyRack Plus clip fallen through the tub — the motor draws excess current and the stator windings cook their enamel insulation, giving a sharp electrical smell. LG posts code LE for a locked or overloaded motor and CE for a current error in the motor circuit. Pull the lower spray arm (reverse thread — turn it clockwise to release), lift out the pull-up filter, and inspect the impeller chamber and pump inlet for glass shards or hard debris.
Heating element contact. Many LG LDP units run an exposed element along the tub floor, and food debris, melted plastic, or label adhesive touching it will carbonize and smell. The classic scenario is a brittle EasyRack Plus tine clip snapping off and landing on the element, which still heats during the wash and sanitize phases even though LG's Dynamic Dry skips a heated-dry stage. Pull both racks and examine the element for melted material, discoloration, or residue, running a finger along it once cool.
Control board. A failing capacitor or relay on the board can produce a burning-electronics smell, sometimes before any visible damage. LG boards are known to be surge-sensitive and often absorb a voltage spike before other parts fail. The board sits behind the outer door panel — close the door halfway, lift it off its hinges, and remove eight Torx T15 screws to reach the inner panel — and you inspect it for darkened or bubbled spots, swollen capacitor tops, and cracked solder joints, smelling the board directly to confirm.
Drain pump seizure. The drain pump (4681EA2001T) lives under a base plate held by four Phillips screws, and when it seizes on debris or a worn bearing it draws heavy current and overheats — but only during draining. Because LG uses the Direct Drive motor for wash circulation and a separate motor for draining, you can tell them apart by timing: a smell during active washing is the main motor, a smell during the higher-pitched drain phase is the drain pump.
Clearing a Jammed Impeller#
Because a jammed impeller is the root of most Direct Drive burning smells, clearing it is the first repair to try — and it costs nothing:
- Cut power at the breaker and pull the lower rack.
- Remove the lower spray arm by turning it clockwise (LG uses a reverse thread), then lift the pull-up filter straight out.
- Shine a flashlight into the impeller chamber and the pump inlet, looking for glass shards, a bone fragment, or a snapped rack clip.
- Work any debris out with needle-nose pliers rather than your fingers — broken glass is the usual find.
- Spin the impeller gently by hand to confirm it turns freely, then reassemble, run a short cycle, and check whether the smell is gone before assuming the motor is damaged.

Replacing the Drain Pump#
If the smell is confined to the drain phase and the pump meters bad, it is a base-access job:
- Disconnect power and water, then tip or pull the machine out to reach the base.
- Remove the base plate — four Phillips screws — to expose the drain pump at the low point.
- Photograph and disconnect the pump wiring and the drain-hose clamp.
- Twist the pump off its mount (a quarter turn on most LG models) and check the volute for the debris that seized it.
- Fit the new pump (4681EA2001T), reconnect, and run a drain to confirm no leak and no smell.

Diagnostic Procedure#
- Power down and locate. Kill the breaker, open the door, and note where the smell is strongest — the base (pump), the tub floor (element), or the door panel (board).
- Run diagnostic mode. Re-energize and hold Rinse + Spray together for three seconds; the machine steps through fill, wash, drain, and dry. Smell and listen at each phase to isolate which cycle produces the odor, and note any code.
- Inspect physically. Unpowered, pull the lower kick panel (four Phillips screws), check the drain pump and its wiring for heat damage, lift the filter and check the sump, and pull the spray arm to inspect the impeller housing.
- Meter the suspects. The Direct Drive stator should read about 5-8 ohms between phases, the heating element about 12-15 ohms, and the drain pump about 20-40 ohms. Check between any motor terminal and the chassis for a ground fault — it should read open; continuity there means a shorted winding.
The Rubber and Wiring Odors#
Two less-common sources round out the list. A hot-rubber or melting smell, despite the absence of a drive belt, usually comes from a displaced drain hose resting against the heating element or from a tub gasket (4036ER2004A) that has shifted and is contacting a hot surface — reroute the hose clear of the element and reseat the gasket in its channel. A faint electrical smell that appears while the machine sits idle is the more worrying one: it points to a wiring-harness short rather than a component under load, and a harness chafed against a sharp edge or a connector backed off its tab can arc intermittently. Trace the harness from the door hinge to the board for chafe marks or discoloration, and never run another cycle on an idle-state smell until you have found its source.
