Disconnect power first#
Before anything else, turn off the breaker or unplug the oven; on a gas KitchenAid, also close the gas supply valve. A stuck element won't fix itself, and restoring power only re-energizes it — leave it off until a technician has looked.

The three usual causes#
- A welded board relay (most common). KitchenAid uses the same Whirlpool control board (W10834736) across its premium ovens, and a power surge can weld a relay shut so the element stays powered regardless of the controls. The board is replaced.
- A shorted temperature sensor. A shorted sensor reads 0 ohms, which the board treats as ice-cold and answers with maximum heat, nonstop. A near-0-ohm reading with power off confirms it.
- A stuck touchpad. Moisture that works in behind the premium glass panel can jam a key, sending a continuous heat command.
Checking it safely#
With the power off, note any error code from the display, then meter the temperature sensor — near 0 ohms means a short and it's replaced before power is restored. If you find nothing obvious, smell burning, or see sparking, hand it to a technician instead of re-energizing a possibly live element.
