Kenmore Washer F21: The Long Drain Error
First: Identify Your Manufacturer
Before diagnosing F21, confirm your Kenmore washer's model prefix. This code and the diagnostic approach below apply specifically to Whirlpool-built models (110.xxxxx). LG-built Kenmore washers (796.xxxxx) display "OE" for drain failures, and Frigidaire-built units (417.xxxxx) use "E2" — completely different diagnostic trees and parts.
Your model number is on a sticker inside the door opening (front-loaders) or under the lid (top-loaders). The first three digits before the period are all you need.

What F21 Tells the Board
The Whirlpool control platform defines F21 as "long drain" — the drain pump ran for the maximum allowed time (typically 8 minutes) without the pressure switch indicating an empty tub. The board does not know why the tub has not emptied; it only knows that it commanded drain, ran the pump for 8 minutes, and water level did not drop sufficiently.
This means something is preventing water from leaving: a blockage between tub and pump, a blockage in the pump itself, a failed pump motor, a restricted drain hose, or (rarely) a pressure switch that cannot detect the falling water level.

The Pump Filter Trap (Fixes F21 in 50%+ of Cases)
Whirlpool front-load washers (which is what your 110-series Kenmore HE2, HE3, HE4, or HE5 platform is) have an accessible pump filter trap on the lower front of the machine. This is the single most common F21 fix.
Accessing the filter:
Look at the very bottom front of the washer. There is either a small rectangular access panel (pop off with a flat screwdriver) or a round cap. Behind the panel you will find a round filter plug and usually a small drain hose with a cap.
First, open the small emergency drain hose and let water drain into a shallow pan. This is tub water that cannot pump out — there may be a gallon or more. Drain it slowly to avoid overflow.
Once water stops flowing from the emergency drain, turn the round filter plug counterclockwise and pull it out. Behind it is the pump filter — a cylindrical screen basket that catches objects before they reach the pump impeller.
Common findings:
- Coins (quarters and dimes are the perfect size to jam the impeller)
- Bobby pins (the wire can wedge between impeller blades and housing)
- Small socks or underwear fragments
- Accumulated lint and fabric fiber (forms a felt-like plug over months)
- Bra underwires (metal wire slips through drum holes)
Clean the filter basket thoroughly. Also shine a flashlight into the pump housing behind where the filter was — verify the impeller (visible as a small fan wheel) can spin freely. Rotate it with a finger — it should turn smoothly with slight magnetic resistance. Grinding, scraping, or inability to turn indicates a foreign object wedged behind the impeller or bearing damage.
Reinstall the filter, close the access panel, and run a spin-drain cycle to verify F21 clears.
Drain Hose Check
If the filter was clean but F21 persists, the blockage is downstream of the pump — in the corrugated drain hose or at its connection to your home's drain standpipe.
Pull the machine forward. The drain hose runs from the pump output (lower rear of machine) up and over in a loop before inserting into the standpipe or laundry sink. Check for:
- Kinks in the corrugated hose (especially where it enters the standpipe)
- The hose inserted too far into the standpipe (creates a siphon/airlock situation — only 6-8 inches should be inserted)
- Blockage at the standpipe end (disconnect hose and run water through it separately)
The internal diameter of these hoses is only about 1.25 inches — a single sock or dense lint mass can create a complete obstruction inside the hose that is not visible from outside.
Drain Pump Motor Failure
If the filter is clear, the hose is clear, and you do not hear the pump running when the machine should be draining — the pump motor itself has failed.
Confirming pump failure:
Start a drain cycle (or let the machine attempt its normal drain). Put your ear near the bottom front of the machine. You should hear a distinct humming/whirring sound from the pump motor. Three possibilities:
- Humming but not pumping — impeller is broken or detached from motor shaft (motor spins, impeller does not)
- Complete silence during drain command — motor is electrically dead (open winding) or not receiving power from board
- Grinding/screeching — pump bearings failed, impeller dragging on housing
For electrical verification: unplug washer, access pump (bottom of machine), disconnect pump connector, measure motor winding resistance. Expected: 3-15 ohms. Open (OL) = burned motor coil.
Replacement drain pump for Whirlpool-built Kenmore washers: $50-$95. Part number varies by sub-model (common ones: WPW10730972, W10876600). The pump mounts with three screws and connects with one hose clamp and one wire harness plug — 30-minute replacement.

| Board not driving pump | $150-$280 | Hard — professional recommended |
Cost Considerations
F21 is overwhelmingly a mechanical/blockage issue rather than an electronic one. In our service data, over 85% of F21 calls are resolved with filter cleaning (free) or pump replacement ($50-$95). This makes it one of the most economically favorable repairs — even professional service calls for F21 rarely exceed $200 total because the fix is almost always a clogged filter or worn pump rather than expensive electronics.
The repair-vs-replace math strongly favors repair for F21 at any machine age. Even a pump replacement at $95 in parts + $120 professional labor is only $215 total — far below the replacement threshold for any functional washer.

Preventing F21 Recurrence
- Check pockets before every load (coins, tissues, bobby pins)
- Use mesh laundry bags for small items (socks, underwear) and items with hooks (bras)
- Clean the pump filter every 3-4 months (monthly if you have pets — pet hair accumulates rapidly)
- Avoid oversudsing (excess suds create foam blockages that slow drainage) — use HE detergent only in HE machines, measured amount only
Important Note About Kenmore Parts Ordering
Because Kenmore is a multi-manufacturer brand (not a maker itself), parts must be ordered by the actual manufacturer's part number — not by searching "Kenmore washer parts." Your model number prefix identifies the real manufacturer:
For washers: the most common Kenmore washer manufacturer is Whirlpool (prefix 110.xxxxx for washers/dryers, 665.xxxxx for dishwashers, 790.xxxxx for ovens). Parts websites like PartSelect and RepairClinic accept your full Kenmore model number and automatically cross-reference to the correct OEM part number. Always verify the part number matches before ordering — similar-looking parts from different manufacturers are not interchangeable even though both machines say "Kenmore" on the exterior.
The Sears Parts Direct website (now Partstown) also stocks these parts but typically at a higher price point than ordering the OEM part directly from an appliance parts wholesaler. Shopping by the OEM part number rather than the Kenmore part number often saves 20-40% on identical components.

Extending Your Kenmore Washer's Lifespan
Regular maintenance prevents many error codes from developing in the first place. For your Kenmore washer, the most impactful maintenance items are:
Monthly: Run a clean cycle (dedicated Clean Washer cycle or hottest cycle with no clothes and a washer cleaner tablet). This dissolves detergent residue and mineral deposits that accumulate in the wash system, drain path, and sensor areas. Residue buildup causes false sensor readings, slow drainage, and reduced cleaning effectiveness.
Every 3-6 months: Clean the inlet screens where supply hoses connect. Hard water areas should clean every 3 months; soft water areas every 6. Also clean the drain pump filter if your model has an accessible one.
Annually: Inspect supply hoses for bulging, cracking, or discoloration. Rubber hoses should be replaced every 5 years regardless of appearance — internal deterioration is invisible until the hose bursts. Upgrade to stainless steel braided hoses for burst protection.
Always: Use the correct amount of HE detergent (if applicable). Check pockets before every load. Do not overload the drum past 3/4 capacity. Leave the door ajar between loads to prevent mold and mildew in the gasket and tub.
