Kenmore Dryer Damaging Clothes — Troubleshooting Guide
Clothes coming out of your Kenmore dryer with snags, tears, scorch marks, or mysterious stains points to specific mechanical issues that differ by platform. The 110-series (Whirlpool-built) and 796-series (LG-built) dryers have fundamentally different drum designs, seal systems, and heating configurations — each with its own failure modes that damage fabrics.
Types of Clothing Damage and What They Mean
Before troubleshooting, identify the type of damage. This narrows the cause immediately:
| Damage type | Most likely cause | Platform most affected |
|---|---|---|
| Small holes or snags | Rough spot on drum seam or damaged baffle | 110-series (older models) |
| Scorch marks / brown spots | Failed heating element or blocked vent causing overheating | All platforms |
| Grease or oil stains | Worn drum bearing or idler pulley lubricant transfer | 110-series, 417-series |
| Rust stains (orange/brown) | Chipped drum coating or rusted drum seam | 110-series (pre-2010) |
| Melted or shrunken synthetics | Thermostat failure allowing excessive heat | 796-series |
| Gray streaks | Drum felt seal deterioration | 110-series |

Drum Seam and Baffle Damage (110-Series Whirlpool Platform)
Rough Drum Seam — The #1 Fabric Snag Cause (30% of cases)
Whirlpool-platform Kenmore dryers (model prefix 110) use a two-piece drum joined by a front and rear seam. Over years of thermal cycling, the seam where the front and rear drum halves meet can develop rough edges or burrs. Clothing catches on these raised spots during tumbling, causing small holes — typically in lightweight fabrics, knits, and T-shirts.
Diagnosis: Run your hand slowly along the inside of the drum, especially at the front and rear seams and around rivet points. Any rough spot you can feel with your fingers will catch fabric.
Fix: Sand the rough area with 220-grit sandpaper until smooth, then seal with high-temperature appliance epoxy. If the seam is extensively corroded, the drum needs replacement.
Parts Cost: $0 (sanding) or $180–$350 (drum replacement) Professional Repair Cost: $80–$120 (seam repair) or $300–$500 (drum replacement)
Damaged Drum Baffles (15% of cases)
The three or four plastic baffles (lifters) inside the drum tumble clothes as the drum rotates. On 110-series models, these baffles are riveted to the drum wall. When a baffle cracks or a rivet head breaks through, the sharp edge tears fabric. Baffles on these models are Whirlpool part WP8547157 or equivalent.
Parts Cost: $8–$20 per baffle Professional Repair Cost: $100–$180
Drum Felt Seal Deterioration (110-Series)
Front or Rear Drum Seal Worn Through (20% of cases)
Whirlpool-platform dryers use felt strips at the front and rear of the drum to seal the gap between the rotating drum and the stationary cabinet. When this felt wears thin or tears, clothing can slip into the gap between the drum and the bulkhead. Items get caught, stretched, or torn, and you may also notice a thumping sound or find small fabric fragments trapped behind the drum.
Gray or dark streaks on light-colored clothing often indicate felt seal material transferring onto fabrics during tumbling — the deteriorating felt sheds fibers.
Parts Cost: $12–$35 (felt seal kit — rear seal is Whirlpool 349241T) Professional Repair Cost: $120–$220
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Heating System Failures Causing Scorch Damage
Blocked Vent Causing Overheating (25% of all platforms)
A restricted dryer vent is the most common cause of scorch marks across all Kenmore platforms. When exhaust cannot escape efficiently, internal temperatures climb well above normal operating range. The 796-series LG-platform dryers will display Flow Sense warnings (d80/d90), but 110-series Whirlpool-platform dryers have no such warning system — they simply run hotter until the high-limit thermostat or thermal fuse intervenes.
Sacramento homes built in the 1990s–2000s frequently have long vent runs through the attic or garage, and dryer lint accumulates in every bend. A vent run exceeding 25 feet of equivalent length (including bends) is at high risk for restriction.
Fix: Disconnect the vent from the dryer and clean the entire run from dryer to exterior cap. Replace crushed or vinyl flex duct with rigid 4-inch aluminum.
Failed Cycling Thermostat (10% of cases)
The cycling thermostat regulates operating temperature by cycling the heating element on and off. When it fails in the closed position, the element runs continuously, overheating the drum. On 110-series gas dryers, the equivalent component is the gas valve coil set (Whirlpool 279834).
Parts Cost: $8–$25 (cycling thermostat) or $15–$40 (gas valve coils) Professional Repair Cost: $100–$200

Grease and Oil Stain Transfer
Worn Drum Support Rollers or Idler Pulley (10% of cases)
The drum support rollers (typically 4 on 110-series, 2 on 796-series) and the idler pulley use sealed bearings that can leak lubricant when worn. This grease transfers to the inside of the drum and then onto clothes, leaving dark greasy spots that are often mistaken for stains from the laundry itself.
Diagnosis: Remove the drum and inspect the support rollers. If you can see grease seepage around the roller shaft or the roller wobbles, it needs replacement. Always replace all rollers at once — if one has worn, the others are not far behind.
Parts Cost: $15–$40 (roller kit, Whirlpool 349241T for 110-series) or $20–$50 (LG 4581EL2002C for 796-series) Professional Repair Cost: $150–$280

Kenmore Parts Pricing: Brand vs OEM
Ordering "Kenmore" replacement parts costs significantly more than ordering the identical OEM part. Since Sears declared bankruptcy in 2018 and closed most service centers, there is no advantage to sourcing Kenmore-branded components.
| Part | Kenmore-branded | OEM equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Drum baffle | $18–$25 | Whirlpool WP8547157: $8–$15 |
| Rear felt seal | $30–$45 | Whirlpool 349241T: $12–$25 |
| Roller kit | $40–$60 | Whirlpool 349241T: $15–$35 |
Prevention
- Clean the lint filter before every load and deep-clean the vent system annually.
- Inspect the drum interior every 6 months by running your hand along seams and baffles.
- Avoid overloading — items pressed against drum walls are more likely to catch on any rough spot.
- Use delicate/low-heat cycles for synthetics and lightweight fabrics, which are most vulnerable to heat and snag damage.
