Jenn-Air Gas Range Burner Won't Ignite — Causes

Know the platform you're working on#

Jenn-Air gas ranges share their ignition design with Whirlpool and Maytag, and that design puts a small spark switch inside each control knob. Push and turn the knob to the light position and a healthy switch closes and tells the module to fire the electrode. A worn switch is why a Jenn-Air burner sometimes will not click at all even though the module and electrode are fine, so keep the switch on your suspect list from the start.

Clean the electrode and dry the burner#

Before chasing switches, rule out the ordinary causes. Lift the grate, cap, and head, and clean the gap around the ceramic electrode with a pin so no food is bridging the spark. If a pot has boiled over, the electrode is likely wet and will click without lighting until it dries — give it fifteen minutes of air. Reseat the cap flat, since a tilted cap sends gas past the spark and looks exactly like an ignition fault.

The click test on a Jenn-Air#

1. Turn one burner to light. No click on that burner alone points to its knob switch or electrode.
2. Try the other burners. If they all click and light, the module is good and the first burner's switch or electrode is the fault.
3. If no burner clicks at all, the shared module — or the power feeding it — is the problem.
4. If a burner clicks strongly but no gas arrives, the valve behind that knob has stiffened and needs replacing.

Downdraft and modular heritage#

Jenn-Air's long history of modular and downdraft cooktops means some units route the burner wiring under a blower assembly, so a loose connector can hide there. If a single burner is intermittent, trace its electrode lead back to the module and look for a connector that has vibrated loose near the downdraft fan before condemning the electrode itself.
