Why Your Samsung Gas Stove Is Burner Won't Ignite

Safety first#

Locate the gas shutoff behind or below the range before you begin. A strong gas smell with nothing lit is a stop sign — shut off the gas, ventilate, and call the utility rather than troubleshooting. Never test for gas with a match or lighter.

Samsung's ignition system#

Samsung gas ranges use electronic ignition — spark igniters on the cooktop and a hot-surface igniter for the oven — and these models are known for igniter failures and gas valve solenoid issues. The NX58 and NX60 series are the most widely installed. The oven igniter glows to roughly 1,800 to 2,500 degrees F to open the oven gas valve.

Causes to check#

• A failed igniter (most common). A weak or cracked igniter can't spark or heat enough to light. A cooktop electrode should spark when you turn the knob; an oven igniter should glow bright orange within about 30 to 60 seconds and read 40 to 400 ohms, with over 400 ohms meaning replace it.
• Clogged ports. If it sparks but nothing catches, the ports are blocked. Take off the cap and head, clear each port with a straight pin (not a toothpick), and set the cap back flat.
• A faulty spark module. The module fires every electrode; no click anywhere means the module, while one dead burner means that electrode or wire. It sits behind the rear panel or under the cooktop.
• A gas valve that stays shut. On Samsung ovens the valve opens only when the igniter draws enough current — about 3.2 to 3.6 amps — so a weak igniter that merely glows won't open it. A cooktop valve tied to a worn knob or stem can also stick shut.
• Wiring or solenoid faults. Loose or chewed wiring between igniter, module, and board causes intermittent or full failure, and Samsung's gas valve solenoids can fail too. Inspect for burn marks, loose spade connectors, and rodent damage.

Diagnose in order#

Turn each cooktop burner to light — all silent is the module, one silent is that burner. Clean and thoroughly dry the burner, since moisture shorts the spark. Check the electrode for cracks, carbon, and a gap of about 1/8 inch, and meter an oven igniter (40 to 400 ohms is healthy). Confirm the gas shutoff is fully open and read any error code on the display.

Don't head into the holidays with a burner that won't light — test each one now.
