Why the whole cooktop clicks at once#

Whirlpool sealed-burner ranges run all their electrodes from a single spark module. It fires until it senses a lit flame, then stops. If any one burner cannot signal a flame — because its cap is off-seat or its electrode is shorted — the module keeps striking on every burner, which is why Whirlpool clicking so often sounds like all of them at once.

The usual causes#

• A cap sitting off-centre. Whirlpool caps have to drop squarely onto the burner base; nudged during cleaning, the electrode fires past the flame and never gets its all-clear.
• Moisture on the electrode. A boil-over or a damp wipe leaves a film that shorts the spark until it dries — the most common single trigger.
• Food or grease in the gap. Carbonised spatter across the electrode conducts current just like water.
• A stuck knob switch. One switch held closed by grease keeps a burner calling for a spark regardless of the knob.
• A failed spark module. Shorted internally, the shared module clicks continuously even when everything is clean, dry, and seated.

Reseat, dry, and clean#

Start by lifting each cap and dropping it back flat and square on its base — this alone cures a surprising number of cases. Then, on a cool cooktop, blot up any moisture, dry the electrodes with a fan or cool hair dryer (trapped water can take an hour or two to clear), and lift baked-on food from the gaps with a wooden pick. If it still clicks bone-dry with every cap seated, a knob switch or the spark module is the part to replace.

Before the holiday cooking season#

A cooktop clicking through every meal is at its worst with a kitchen full of guests. If a spill or a clean left yours ticking, reseat the caps and dry the burners now so the range is quiet before the holiday cooking. If it keeps clicking dry, book a visit and a technician will test the switches and change the spark module.
