Check the knob#
The cheaper possibility is a worn knob. If the D-shaped collar inside the knob has rounded, the knob reaches off while the valve stem lags behind, and gas keeps flowing. Pull the knob off and turn the bare stem to off with pliers. A flame that dies confirms a bad knob; a flame that persists with the stem fully closed confirms the valve.
Never improvise a fix#
Do not tape, wedge, or block the knob to hold the burner off — the valve is still leaking gas underneath. The only safe holding state is the gas supply closed. Replacing a gas valve involves live gas and a follow-up leak test, so it belongs with a technician rather than a workaround.
