Maytag Gas Stove Burner Won't Ignite: Causes

Safety first#

Find your gas shutoff (usually behind or below the range) before you touch anything. If there's a strong gas smell with nothing lit, don't troubleshoot — cut the gas, ventilate, and call the utility. Don't use a match or lighter to check for gas flow while diagnosing.

How a Maytag lights#

The cooktop burners spark from a ceramic electrode; the oven relies on a hot-surface igniter that glows to about 1,800 to 2,500 degrees F to release oven gas.

What stops ignition#

• A failed igniter (most common). Cracked or weakened, it can't make the spark or heat to light the gas. A cooktop electrode should spark visibly on knob-turn; an oven igniter should glow orange in about 30 to 60 seconds and read 40 to 400 ohms — anything over 400 ohms is weak and should be replaced.
• Clogged ports. A sparking igniter with no flame usually means blocked ports. Remove the cap and head, run a straight pin through each port (never a toothpick), and reseat the cap flat for even gas flow.
• A bad spark module. This shared part pulses high voltage to the electrodes. If nothing clicks on any burner, suspect the module; if just one burner is dead, suspect that electrode or wire. It's behind the rear panel or under the cooktop.
• A valve that won't open. The oven gas valve opens only when the igniter pulls enough current — around 3.2 to 3.6 amps — so a weak, cool-glowing igniter leaves it shut. On the cooktop, a worn valve stem or knob can keep the valve from opening.
• Wiring trouble. Loose or damaged connections among igniter, module, and board cause on-and-off or total failure. Check for burn marks, loose spade terminals, and rodent-chewed insulation behind the range.

Step by step#

Turn each cooktop burner to light: all quiet points to the module, one quiet to that burner. Clean the burner and dry it completely, since moisture shorts the spark. Inspect the electrode for cracks, carbon, and a gap near 1/8 inch, and read an oven igniter with a multimeter (40 to 400 ohms is good). Confirm the shutoff is fully open — handle parallel to the pipe — and note any display codes.
