How to Replace a Whirlpool Interior Light Bulb

Whirlpool OTR microwaves (WMH series) light the cavity and the cooktop from two separate fittings. Older models — before 2018 — use 40W T8 or A15 incandescent appliance bulbs; newer ones may have an LED module instead. Check your manual to identify your type before buying.

Bulb types by model#

Choose 130V-rated bulbs over plain 120V ones — the higher rating lasts longer through appliance heat cycling.

Safety warning: Unplug or turn off breaker. Allow old bulb to cool if recently used. This repair does not access any HV components.

Interior cavity light#

1. Unplug the microwave#

Pull the plug from the cabinet outlet or switch off the breaker.

2. Remove the light cover#

Open the door and look at the upper rear or upper side wall of the cavity. The cover is held by one Phillips screw or a push-tab; remove the screw or press the tab and slide it off.

3. Back out the old bulb#

Let it cool, then turn it counterclockwise to remove. If it is stuck, grip it with a dry rubber glove — do not force it, since a bulb that breaks in the socket is far harder to extract.

4. Fit the new bulb and test#

Thread the replacement in clockwise until hand-tight, no more, then refit the cover, restore power, and open the door — the door switch should light the lamp.

Cooktop surface light#

5. Reach the surface cover#

Close the door and look at the underside of the unit facing the cooktop, where one or two rectangular lens covers are held by Phillips screws.

6. Swap the bulb#

Remove the screws, lower the cover, turn the old bulb counterclockwise, thread the new one in clockwise, and refit the cover.

7. Test the surface light#

Press the Surface Light button on the panel; it should light at both levels — full and night-light.

LED module (newer models)#

Models from 2018 on have no screw-in bulbs. Remove the light cover, unscrew or unclip the LED module (one or two small screws), unplug its wire connector, connect the model-specific replacement, and remount the cover. LED modules rarely die outright — more often one LED dims — and are replaced as a unit.

Troubleshooting#

• New bulb does not light: check the socket for power with a non-contact tester, door open; no voltage means the door switch controlling the light has failed.
• Burns out within weeks: a poor socket connection is arcing — clean the contacts with sandpaper.
• Surface light flickers: intermittent contact; with power off, bend the center socket tab slightly upward.
• Both lights die together: not coincidence — check the main fuse and the board light relay.

Important notes#

• Never use LED screw-in bulbs inside the cooking cavity — microwave energy interferes with their drivers, causing flicker or instant failure; use incandescent there. LED screw-ins are fine for the cooktop surface light, which sits outside the cavity.
• Never exceed the rated wattage in the enclosed socket, and remember plain 120V bulbs work but burn out sooner than 130V appliance bulbs.
