How to Replace the Interior Light Bulb in a Whirlpool Over-the-Range Microwave

Interior Cavity Light Replacement
Step 1: Unplug the microwave
Pull plug from cabinet outlet or turn off breaker.
Step 2: Find and remove light cover
Open door, look inside cavity — upper rear wall or upper side wall. Cover held by one Phillips screw or push-tab release. Remove screw or press tab and slide cover off.
Step 3: Remove old bulb
Allow to cool. Turn counterclockwise and remove. If stuck, use dry rubber glove for grip. Do not force — broken bulb in socket complicates extraction.
Step 4: Install new bulb
Screw in clockwise until hand-tight. Do not overtighten.
Step 5: Replace cover and test
Reinstall cover with screw or tab. Restore power. Open door — light should illuminate (door switch activates light circuit).

Cooktop Surface Light Replacement
Step 6: Find surface light cover
Close microwave door. Look at bottom of unit (facing cooktop). One or two rectangular lens covers held by Phillips screws.
Step 7: Remove cover and replace
Remove screws, lower cover. Turn old bulb counterclockwise, install new bulb clockwise. Reinstall cover.
Step 8: Test surface light
Press Surface Light button on control panel. Should illuminate at both brightness levels (full and night-light mode).
LED Module Replacement (Newer Models)
If your model has integrated LED lighting (2018+), there are no screw-in bulbs. The LED module plugs into a connector:
- Remove light cover
- Unscrew or unclip LED module (1-2 small screws)
- Disconnect wire plug
- Connect replacement module (model-specific part number)
- Remount and reinstall cover
LED modules rarely fail completely — more common is one LED in the strip dimming. Module replaced as a unit.
