How to Replace the Interior Light Bulb in a Whirlpool Over-the-Range Microwave
When the interior light in your Whirlpool OTR microwave burns out, food is difficult to monitor and the cooktop below loses illumination. This is the simplest possible microwave repair — takes 5-10 minutes with no electrical component exposure. Both cavity light and cooktop surface light are easily accessible on Whirlpool WMH-series models.
Whirlpool OTR microwaves use two separate light locations: one illuminates the cooking cavity, one provides task lighting for the cooktop. Older models (pre-2018) use 40W T8 or A15 incandescent appliance bulbs. Newer models may use non-replaceable LED modules. Check your manual to identify your type before purchasing.
Before You Start
- Tools needed: Phillips #2 screwdriver (some models tool-free)
- Parts needed: 40W 130V appliance bulb, T8 intermediate base or A15 medium base (~$4-$8 for 2-pack)
- Time required: 5-10 minutes
- Difficulty: Beginner
- Safety warning: Unplug or turn off breaker. Allow old bulb to cool if recently used. This repair does not access any HV components.

Bulb Types by Model
| Location | Type | Wattage | Base | Whirlpool Part |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Interior (older) | T8 tubular | 40W 130V | Intermediate | 8206232A |
| Interior (newer) | A15 | 40W 130V | Medium | W11107014 |
| Surface/cooktop | A15 | 40W 130V | Medium | W11107014 |
| Interior (LED) | LED module | 3W 12V | Plug connector | Model-specific |
Use 130V rated bulbs (not 120V) — higher rating extends life in appliance heat-cycling applications.
Interior Cavity Light Replacement
Step 1: Unplug the microwave
Pull plug from cabinet outlet or turn off breaker.
Step 2: Find and remove light cover
Open door, look inside cavity — upper rear wall or upper side wall. Cover held by one Phillips screw or push-tab release. Remove screw or press tab and slide cover off.
Step 3: Remove old bulb
Allow to cool. Turn counterclockwise and remove. If stuck, use dry rubber glove for grip. Do not force — broken bulb in socket complicates extraction.
Step 4: Install new bulb
Screw in clockwise until hand-tight. Do not overtighten.
Step 5: Replace cover and test
Reinstall cover with screw or tab. Restore power. Open door — light should illuminate (door switch activates light circuit).
Safety First — Know the Risks
Microwave capacitors store lethal voltage (4,000V+) even when unplugged. This is the single most dangerous DIY appliance repair. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Cooktop Surface Light Replacement
Step 6: Find surface light cover
Close microwave door. Look at bottom of unit (facing cooktop). One or two rectangular lens covers held by Phillips screws.
Step 7: Remove cover and replace
Remove screws, lower cover. Turn old bulb counterclockwise, install new bulb clockwise. Reinstall cover.
Step 8: Test surface light
Press Surface Light button on control panel. Should illuminate at both brightness levels (full and night-light mode).
LED Module Replacement (Newer Models)
If your model has integrated LED lighting (2018+), there are no screw-in bulbs. The LED module plugs into a connector:
- Remove light cover
- Unscrew or unclip LED module (1-2 small screws)
- Disconnect wire plug
- Connect replacement module (model-specific part number)
- Remount and reinstall cover
LED modules rarely fail completely — more common is one LED in the strip dimming. Module replaced as a unit.
The Real Cost of DIY

Troubleshooting
- New bulb does not light: verify socket has power (non-contact voltage tester near socket with door open). No voltage = door switch controlling light has failed
- Bulb burns out quickly (within weeks): socket has poor connection causing arcing. Clean contacts with sandpaper
- Surface light flickers: intermittent bulb-to-socket contact. Bend center contact tab in socket slightly upward
- Both lights fail simultaneously: not coincidence — check main fuse and board light relay
- Dimmer mode does not work: control board dimmer circuit failure, not a bulb issue

Important Notes
- Never use LED screw-in bulbs for the interior cavity — electromagnetic radiation interferes with LED drivers causing flicker or immediate failure. Use incandescent for cavity
- LED screw-ins are acceptable for cooktop surface light only (outside the cooking cavity)
- Never exceed rated wattage — higher wattage in enclosed space creates fire risk
- Standard household 120V bulbs work but burn out faster than 130V rated appliance bulbs

FAQ
Q: What wattage bulb does a Whirlpool microwave use? A: 40W 130V for both cavity and surface lights on most models. Never exceed wattage on socket label.
Q: Can I use LED bulbs in my Whirlpool microwave? A: Not inside the cooking cavity — microwave radiation interferes with LED drivers. LED screw-ins work for the cooktop surface light only.
Q: Why does my light stay on with door closed? A: Door switch controlling light circuit is stuck/misaligned — switch issue, not bulb issue.
Q: How often do microwave bulbs need replacement? A: Incandescent: every 3-5 years with typical use. LED modules: typically the life of the appliance (10+ years).
