Afternoon: Swapping a Whirlpool OTR Microwave

Tools: Torx T20, Phillips #2, a 1/4-inch nut driver, a drill with a 3/8-inch bit, a stud finder, a level, a measuring tape, wire nuts and a voltage tester. Kill the breaker for the microwave outlet and confirm with the tester before anything else.

Taking the old one down#

1. Duct. Open the cabinet above and disconnect the duct from the top exhaust port, whether it is foil-taped or band-clamped. Recirculating installations skip this.
2. Upper bolts. From inside that cabinet, remove the 2 bolts or lag screws passing through the cabinet floor into the top of the microwave. They are what stop it tipping forward, so with them out the unit hangs on the lower bracket hooks alone.
3. Lift off. With your helper taking the weight from below, tilt the bottom slightly away from the wall and lift to disengage the rear slots from the bracket. Lower it carefully and get it out of the way.
4. Electrical. Unplug from the cabinet outlet, or open the hardwired junction box, verify 0V and remove the wire nuts. Photograph or note the wire colours.

The bracket decides everything#

Take all the old bracket screws out of the wall. Use the template supplied with the new microwave to mark the new position, then check level across the full width — a bracket that is out will show up as a microwave that visibly is not, and no amount of adjustment at the unit fixes it.

Find the studs. A minimum of 2 screws must land in studs, because drywall anchors are not holding 80 lbs overhead. Pre-drill, then secure with the provided lag screws.

Preparing and hanging the new unit#

Unpack it, decide whether your duct exits at the rear or the top, and knock out the matching plug — the wrong knockout is the classic error here, and you cannot un-knock it. Fit the duct adapter and thread the power cord up through the top hole.

Then the heavy moment. With your helper, lift the microwave into position, tilt the bottom toward the wall, push the top flush, and lift slightly so the keyhole slots engage the bracket. It should hang securely on its own before anyone lets go. Take your time on this step.

Drive the mounting bolts from inside the cabinet into the threaded holes in the microwave top. Connect the duct with foil tape rather than fabric tape, which degrades in heat. Then the electrical: cord into the outlet, or black to black, white to white and green to ground under wire nuts.

Testing before you call it done#

Restore power and work through the list: display lights, a 60-second water heating test, the exhaust fan at every speed, the cooktop light at both brightness levels, and sensor cook stopping itself when it detects steam. Enter diagnostic mode to confirm nothing was stored during installation.

Go outside that group and you may need to reposition the bracket and adapt the ductwork, which turns a swap into a small project.
