How to Replace a Maytag Washing Machine Drive Belt
Some Maytag top-load washing machines (particularly older MVW models) use a drive belt to connect the motor to the transmission. When this belt wears, stretches, or breaks, the washer may not agitate or spin properly. Modern direct-drive Maytag washers do not use a belt — they use a motor coupling instead. Check your model to determine which system you have before ordering parts.
This guide covers belt replacement on belt-driven Maytag top-load models sharing the Whirlpool platform.
Before You Start
- Tools needed: Phillips #2 screwdriver, putty knife, 7/16-inch socket, adjustable wrench
- Parts needed: Replacement drive belt (~$15-$30)
- Time required: 30-45 minutes
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Safety warning: Disconnect power and water supply before beginning.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Access the Drive System
Remove the cabinet by releasing the spring clips with a putty knife at each front corner of the top seam. Tilt the cabinet forward and lift off. You now have full access to the motor, transmission, and drive belt (if belt-driven) or motor coupling (if direct-drive).
If your model is direct-drive (no belt visible — motor connects directly to transmission via a rubber coupling), see our motor coupling replacement guide instead.
Step 2: Release Belt Tension
The belt routes from the motor pulley to the transmission pulley. Tension is maintained either by motor mounting position (slotted motor mount that adjusts) or a spring tensioner. For slotted-mount motors: loosen the motor mounting bolts and slide the motor toward the transmission to create slack. For spring-tensioner models: release the tensioner arm to slacken the belt.
Step 3: Remove the Old Belt
Slip the belt off both pulleys. Inspect the old belt for: cracks (perpendicular to length), glazing (shiny smooth surface), stretching (loose fit), fraying (edge deterioration), or complete breakage. Compare the old belt length and width to the replacement to verify correct part.
Step 4: Install the New Belt
Route the new belt around the transmission pulley first, then loop it over the motor pulley. Ensure the belt sits in the pulley grooves (V-belt) or flat against the pulley face (flat belt) depending on type.
Restore proper tension: slide the motor away from the transmission (slotted mount) until the belt deflects approximately 1/2 inch when pressed at mid-span. Tighten the motor mounting bolts. For spring-tensioner models, the tensioner automatically applies correct tension.
Step 5: Verify Rotation
Before reinstalling the cabinet, restore power briefly and run a spin cycle. Observe that the belt tracks properly without slipping or wandering off the pulleys. The washer should reach full spin speed without hesitation. Disconnect power again before reinstalling the cabinet.
Step 6: Reassemble
Position the cabinet back over the tub, tilting it up and pushing back until the rear hooks engage. Press the top seam until the spring clips snap into place. Reconnect water supply hoses and restore power.
Direct-Drive Models (No Belt)
Most modern Maytag MVW top-load washers use a direct-drive motor coupling instead of a belt. The coupling is a 3-piece assembly (two drive forks + rubber disc) that connects the motor shaft directly to the transmission input shaft. When the rubber disc wears through, the motor spins freely without driving the transmission.
Replacement procedure: remove the cabinet, disconnect motor, pull motor straight back off the coupling, replace the coupling assembly, and reinstall the motor. This is actually simpler than belt replacement and the part costs $10-$25.

Maytag Commercial-Grade Motor
Maytag washers use a commercial-grade motor covered by the 10-year limited warranty. The motor itself rarely fails — it is the connection between motor and transmission (belt or coupling) that wears. If the motor itself makes grinding noises or will not start, verify whether the issue qualifies for warranty coverage before paying for replacement.
When to Call a Professional
- Transmission failure (sealed unit, not repairable — whole unit replacement)
- Motor bearing noise (may be warranty-covered)
- If you cannot determine whether your model is belt-driven or direct-drive
- Belt breaks repeatedly within months (indicates a misalignment or seized component)

FAQ
Q: Does my Maytag washer have a belt or direct drive? A: Remove the cabinet and look at the motor-to-transmission connection. If you see a belt looping between two pulleys, it is belt-driven. If the motor connects directly to the transmission (no pulleys, no belt), it is direct-drive with a coupling.
Q: How long does a Maytag washer drive belt last? A: Belt-driven models typically need belt replacement after 8-12 years. Signs of wear include slipping during heavy loads, a burning rubber smell, or the washer not reaching full spin speed.
Q: Can I use a universal belt? A: No — washer belts are model-specific in length and profile (V-belt vs flat). Order by your exact Maytag model number for correct fit.
Q: Why does my Maytag washer hum but not agitate? A: On belt-driven models, a broken or slipping belt allows the motor to run without driving the transmission. On direct-drive models, a worn coupling allows the same symptom. Check both depending on your model type.
