How to Disassemble a GE Washer#

What Makes a GE Teardown Different#
The two tools that characterise this teardown are a quarter-inch hex nut driver and a putty knife, and each of them is there for a specific fastening style rather than for convenience.
Why a nut driver and not a screwdriver#
The quarter-inch hex head is the American appliance sheet-metal fastener, and it is on panel after panel of this machine. Those heads are shallow, and the slot moulded across them is decorative rather than structural: put a blade or a Phillips in one and it cams out under load, rounds the head and leaves you gripping a stub with pliers in a place where there is no room to grip anything. A nut driver wraps the head instead of sitting in it, so the whole turn goes into the screw. It also lets you start a fastener one-handed, which matters when the other hand is holding a panel that is no longer supported.
The Phillips #2 earns its place on the pan-head screws around the fascia and the smaller brackets; the flat blade is for prying and for the occasional slotted machine screw, not for hex heads. The pliers are for spade terminals, hose clamps and clips — never for a screw you have already rounded, because that is the point at which the panel stops coming off cleanly.
The putty knife, and what a spring clip is#
A spring clip is not a fastener you undo. It is a sprung steel tongue that grips a lip on the mating panel, and it releases only when something thin and stiff is slid into the seam to push the tongue back while the panel is pulled away from it. That is the putty knife: wide enough to find the clip without hunting, thin enough to enter a painted seam, and blunt enough not to score the finish or cut the hand pulling on the panel.
The failure mode when people do not have one is always the same. They find the screws, take them all out, and then lever at the seam with a screwdriver because the panel still will not come. The blade concentrates all the force on one point, the paint chips, the lip deforms, and a clip that is bent no longer holds the panel tight when it goes back — which turns into a buzz or a rattle at spin that was not there before the repair. Slide the knife along the seam until you feel it stop against the clip, push in and pull the panel out at the same time, and the clip lets go without complaint.
The work gloves belong on the same list as the tools rather than as an afterthought. The inside of a washer cabinet is unfinished sheet metal, and the cut edges along a panel opening were never intended to be handled.

Reassembly Notes#
Sheet-metal screws cut their own thread, and the way they go back is where most of the damage in a washer teardown actually happens. Start every one by hand and turn it backwards until you feel it drop into the thread that is already there, then drive it. A fresh thread started at an angle strips the hole, and a stripped hole in a panel edge means that panel never sits flat again — which on a machine that vibrates for a living is a noise complaint waiting to happen.
Snug is the target, not tight. These screws are holding thin steel to thin steel; going past snug dimples the panel around the head and pulls the edge out of line with its neighbour.
Then work back out through the routes you came in by. Anything you disturbed at the control panel gets re-seated by its latch rather than by pulling on the wire, and the harness has to lie where it lay — not pinched between the panel and the cabinet edge as it closes. Where a front or top panel is held by spring clips, line the panel up square and press it home until each clip seats; do not persuade a misaligned panel with the heel of your hand, because the clip will take the misalignment and hold it. Behind the service access panel, hose clamps and spade terminals both want checking with a light pull: a terminal that slides off without resistance will arc, and a clamp that is merely resting will weep.
Restore in the right order, and test before you close the last panel if you can. Open the water valve first and look for a drip at every joint you touched while the cabinet is still open and the breaker is still off — a leak found dry is a two-minute fix, and the same leak found later is a floor. Then power at the breaker, and run the machine through a fill and a drain before you decide the job is finished, because the pump and the hoses are the parts most likely to tell you something is wrong.
Last, put the machine back where it lives and level it before you load it. A washer that rocks on one foot puts every bit of that counterweighted drum into the cabinet corner it is standing on, and it will find the panel you did not quite seat.
When to Stop and Call a Technician#
Stop before lifting the outer tub or the drum assembly on your own. The counterweights make that a two-person lift, and it is the boundary of this page rather than a caution to weigh up: the mass is concentrated, it is high in the cabinet, and it goes over sideways the moment your grip is not square to it.
The same hazard runs through everything above it. The drum and its counterweights make the cabinet front-heavy and unstable as soon as panels are off, so the machine is at its least stable exactly when your hands are inside it. Keep it on a flat floor, keep it out from the wall no further than the work needs, and do not lean on an open cabinet to reach past something.
Water is the other half. Residual water sits in the pump and the hoses whatever the display says, and a completed cycle is not the same thing as an empty machine. Assume every hose you open is holding some, have a towel and a shallow tray under it before the clamp comes off, and treat a machine that failed mid-cycle as full until you have proven otherwise.
Call a technician rather than carrying on for a tub or drum that has to come out, for melted or scorched wiring anywhere in the cabinet, for a leak you cannot trace to a joint you can reach, and for any bearing or seal work behind the drum — that is a strip-down rather than an access job, and it is the point where the counterweights stop being a caution and become the whole problem.
