How to Replace a GE Dryer Drive Belt: Step-by-Step Guide
The drive belt on a GE dryer is a flat narrow belt that wraps around the drum, routes through a spring-loaded idler pulley, and connects to the motor pulley. When this belt breaks or becomes frayed, the drum will not rotate. On newer GE dryers equipped with a belt switch, the motor refuses to start entirely when belt tension is lost, so the dryer appears completely dead. Replacing the belt is one of the most common GE dryer repairs and is well within reach of most homeowners.
GE dryers use a thinner, flatter belt than many competing brands. The belt rides in a smooth track area on the drum exterior. Proper routing is critical — an incorrectly routed belt will slip off or cause the drum to spin in the wrong direction.
Before You Start
- Tools needed: Putty knife (flexible, 1.25 inch blade), Phillips #2 screwdriver, 5/16-inch nut driver, work gloves
- Parts needed: GE dryer drive belt (WE12M29 for most models, verify by model number — approximately $15-35)
- Time required: 30-45 minutes
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Safety warning: Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet. Gas models: also shut off gas supply valve.

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Unplug and Position
Unplug the dryer from the 240V outlet (electric) or 120V outlet (gas). Pull the unit forward enough to work around it. You will need access to the front primarily, with brief rear access later.
Step 2: Release the Top Panel with Putty Knife
Insert a flexible putty knife into the front seam where the top panel meets the front panel. Position it approximately 2-3 inches from the left corner. Push the knife straight back toward the rear wall to compress the spring clip. You will feel it release. Repeat on the right side. Pivot the top panel up and back where it rests on its hinges.
Step 3: Disconnect the Door Switch
Locate the door switch wiring connector at the top-right area of the front panel interior. Press the locking tab and pull the connector apart. This frees the front panel for removal.
Step 4: Remove the Front Panel
Remove the two Phillips screws at the upper corners of the front panel (now visible with top raised). Lift the front panel slightly to clear the lower clips or remove lower screws (model-dependent). Tilt the panel forward and set aside.
Step 5: Note the Old Belt Position
Before removing anything, observe how the current belt (even if broken) is routed. On GE dryers, the belt wraps around the drum in a smooth track near the rear. It then routes down and around the idler pulley wheel, then around the motor pulley. Take a photo for reference during reassembly.
Step 6: Release Belt Tension and Remove Drum
Reach below the drum toward the motor area. You will find the idler pulley on a spring-loaded arm. Push the arm toward the motor to release tension, then slip the belt off the idler and motor pulleys. With the belt slack, slide it off the drum. Now lift the drum forward and out of the cabinet, supporting it at the rear to clear the support rollers.
Step 7: Install the New Belt
Place the new belt around the drum with the ribbed side facing the drum and the flat smooth side facing outward. Position it in the smooth track area toward the rear of the drum surface. This track is slightly indented and helps keep the belt centered during operation.
Step 8: Reinstall the Drum and Route the Belt
Lower the drum back into position on the rear support rollers. Let the belt hang below the drum. Reach under and route the belt around the idler pulley wheel first (the belt wraps the left side of the wheel when viewed from the front), then continue to the motor pulley. Push the idler arm toward the motor to create enough slack to fit the belt onto the motor pulley, then release. The spring tension should pull the belt taut.
Step 9: Verify Rotation
Before reassembling the panels, rotate the drum by hand. It should spin smoothly with slight belt tension resistance. If it binds, the belt may be misrouted or the idler is not engaging correctly. The drum should rotate in the direction that would tumble clothes toward the back at the top of the rotation.
Step 10: Reassemble the Cabinet
Reinstall the front panel by positioning the lower clips first, then tilting the top into place and replacing the upper screws. Reconnect the door switch connector. Lower the top panel until both spring clips snap into place. Push the dryer back into position, reconnect power and exhaust duct, and run a brief test cycle.
Belt Routing Summary
Looking at the motor area from the front with the drum in place:
- Belt comes down from drum (smooth side out)
- Routes around the left side of the idler wheel
- Continues to the right and wraps around the motor pulley
- Idler spring arm pulls left, maintaining tension
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Troubleshooting After Belt Replacement
- If the drum rotates in the wrong direction, the belt is routed incorrectly around the motor pulley. Remove and reroute
- If the belt slips off during the test cycle, verify it is seated in the drum track and that the idler arm has proper spring tension
- If the dryer still will not start after belt replacement, check the belt switch. This small switch near the idler area detects belt tension and must be in the closed position for the motor to receive power
- If you hear squealing immediately after replacement, the belt is likely too tight or the idler pulley bearing is worn. A new belt on a worn idler can squeal until the surfaces mate. If it persists beyond a few cycles, replace the idler pulley
Belt Part Numbers by GE Dryer Model
| Model Series | Belt Part Number | Length |
|---|---|---|
| GTD series (standard) | WE12M29 | 89.5 inches |
| GFD series (Profile) | WE12M29 | 89.5 inches |
| Older GE models | WE12X21574 | Varies |
Always verify by your specific model number. The model tag is inside the door frame on GE dryers.

When to Call a Professional
- If the drum support rollers are worn (visible flat spots, wobble, or noise) — replace them at the same time as the belt since you already have the drum out
- If the motor pulley is damaged or the motor shaft is bent
- If you cannot achieve proper belt tension after multiple routing attempts
- If the dryer is a stacked unit where drum removal requires additional disassembly and support

FAQ
Q: How often does a GE dryer belt need replacement? A: GE dryer belts typically last 8-12 years under normal use. Signs of a failing belt include squealing during startup, visible fraying or cracking, or the drum turning unevenly.
Q: Can I use a universal dryer belt on my GE dryer? A: GE dryers require a flat narrow belt design specific to their idler routing. Universal drum belts designed for Whirlpool or other brands have different widths and rib patterns. Always use the GE-specified belt part number for your model.
Q: Why did my GE dryer belt break? A: Belts break from age and normal wear. However, a seized drum roller or idler pulley accelerates belt wear significantly. When replacing a belt, always inspect rollers and the idler for smooth rotation to prevent premature failure of the new belt.
Q: Is it worth replacing the belt on a 10-year-old GE dryer? A: If the dryer otherwise functions well, a belt replacement at $15-35 in parts is one of the most cost-effective repairs in appliance ownership. The labor (if professional) adds $150-250 but is still far below replacement cost.
