How to Maintain a Whirlpool Washing Machine
A Whirlpool washer stays reliable on a simple schedule: a monthly Clean Washer cycle with an Affresh tablet plus a bellow wipe, quarterly filter and hose checks, and an annual shock-absorber or suspension-rod test. Difficulty: beginner; 20-30 minutes a month.
Whirlpool builds WFW front-loaders and WTW top-loaders for owner upkeep, and staying ahead of their specific wear points prevents most odor and vibration complaints. Work the cadence below rather than waiting for a fault.

Safety first#
Unplug before inspecting any internal components. Turn off water supply when checking hoses.
Monthly#
Run the Clean Washer cycle empty with one Affresh tablet (W10501250) dropped in the drum, not the dispenser — it clears biofilm from the outer tub and drain. On front-loaders, fold back the door bellow and wipe it with a 50/50 vinegar-water mix, clearing the drain holes at the 6 o'clock position; this five-minute habit heads off the classic mold smell. Rinse the detergent drawer and Load & Go tank opening so the dispensing valve stays clear. After every load, leave the door open at least 4 inches — closed-door humidity alone drives about 70% of cleaning-related service calls.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Quarterly#
On front-loaders, open the lower panel, set a pan beneath, and slowly unscrew the drain-pump filter to clear coins, hair ties, and lint, then reinstall it hand-tight. Shut the supply valves and check both fill-hose inlet screens for sediment, replacing rubber hoses every 5 years and braided stainless every 8. Level the cabinet in both directions on all four feet — even small tilt accelerates bearing wear on WFW models and suspension-rod wear on WTW models. Finally, run an empty spin: new vibration on a WFW points at failing shock absorbers (WPW10739670), while a click-click during the WTW agitate-to-spin shift means worn shift-actuator gears.
Every six months#
If your WFW has steam, wrap a vinegar-soaked cloth around the steam nozzle for 10 minutes and clear it with a wooden toothpick. Pull the machine out and confirm the drain hose is not kinked or pushed more than 8 inches into the standpipe. Start a short cycle and verify FreshHold tumbles periodically afterward — if it does not, the timer module or fan is starting to fail.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

Annually#
On front-loaders, push down firmly on the inner drum and release: it should settle within 1-2 bounces, and 3 or more means the shock absorbers (WPW10739670) are worn and due as a pair. On top-loaders, pull the cabinet (putty knife at the spring clips about 2.5 inches from the corners) and press the outer tub — it should also recover in 1-2 bounces; replace all four suspension rods as a set if any show cracking. With the machine unplugged, inspect the rear harness connections to the motor, MCU, and heater for heat discoloration and reseat each firmly.
Seasonal notes#
In hot weather, cut detergent about 25% since warm supply water sudses more. In an unheated space below 40 degrees, run a warm cycle before first use to clear ice from the pump. Before a long trip, shut the supply valves, run a Clean Washer cycle, and prop the door open.
Don't Void Your Warranty
Opening your appliance yourself may void the manufacturer warranty. Our repair comes with a 90-day guarantee, and we document everything for warranty compliance.

Common issues#
| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Musty smell despite monthly cleaning | run 3 consecutive Affresh cycles on the hottest setting; a set-in biofilm may need a bellow replacement |
| Detergent residue on clothes | you are overdosing — use exactly 2 tablespoons of HE detergent per load, since the Adaptive Wash sensors cannot compensate for excess soap |
| Vibration getting worse | check leveling first, then the shock absorbers (WFW) or suspension rods (WTW), which wear progressively |
