GE Microwave Filter Replacement — Grease and Charcoal Filters
GE over-the-range microwaves have two types of filters: the aluminum grease filter that traps grease particles from cooking, and the charcoal filter that removes odors (only on recirculating-mode installations).
Grease Filter
The grease filter is an aluminum mesh panel underneath the microwave, directly above the cooktop. It captures airborne grease from stovetop cooking before it enters the fan and ductwork.
Cleaning (Monthly)
- Remove the filter (push-tab or slide-out, depending on model)
- Soak in hot water with dish soap or a degreaser for 15-20 minutes
- Scrub gently with a soft brush
- Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry
- Reinstall
Replacement
Replace when the mesh is bent, torn, or corroded beyond cleaning. The filter no longer captures grease effectively once the mesh is damaged.

Charcoal Filter
The charcoal filter sits behind a cover panel on the top or back of the microwave. It is used only when the microwave vents in recirculating mode (no ductwork to outside). The activated charcoal absorbs cooking odors.
Replacement (Every 6-12 Months)
Charcoal filters cannot be cleaned or washed — the charcoal becomes saturated and must be replaced. Remove the cover panel, slide out the old filter, and insert the new one.
