GE Gas Cooktop Uneven Flame — Diagnose the Cause
A GE gas cooktop burner that burns unevenly or yellow is usually telling you the ports are partly clogged, the cap is off-center, or gas pressure is low. Clean the cap, head, and ports with a pin and reseat the cap level first — a clogged port or a tilted cap accounts for most uneven-flame calls on a GE cooktop.
Start with the ports#
Each GE cooktop burner rings gas out through a row of small ports, and everyday cooking clogs them with grease and boil-over crust. When some ports plug, the flame goes tall in places and disappears in others. Remove the cap and head, soak them, and clear every port with a straight pin so the ring of flame is even all the way around. Skip the toothpick — a broken tip only makes the blockage worse.
Level the cap#
A cap that has been dropped back on crooked pushes gas to one side, so half the burner flares while the rest struggles. Set the cap flat on its head and spin it to confirm it seats without wobble. This alone fixes a lopsided flame more often than any other single step.

Reading the flame color#
Aim for blue with small yellow tips. A fully yellow, lazy flame is short of air — often from a clogged burner rather than a shutter problem on a cooktop — while a roaring flame that lifts off the ports has too much air. Clean the burner first and recheck the color before assuming anything deeper.
Low pressure across every burner#
If all burners are weak at once, look past the burners to the gas supply. Confirm the shutoff behind the cooktop is fully open and the flexible connector has no kink. A partly closed valve or a pinched line starves every burner equally and mimics a burner fault.
