Frigidaire Washer Switch Replacement Guide — Cost, Signs & DIY Tips
Frigidaire washers have two types of switches that commonly fail: the door switch (on both front-load and top-load models) and the water temperature switch (on top-load models with physical selector switches).
Door Switch — Front-Load (EFLS)
On EFLS front-load washers, the door switch is integrated into the door lock assembly (see the door latch guide). The switch confirms the door is closed and locked before the cycle proceeds. If the switch fails within the lock assembly, you typically replace the entire lock assembly — the switch is not sold separately.
However, some EFLS models have a separate door switch in addition to the lock assembly. This secondary switch is a simple plunger-type microswitch mounted on the front panel frame. If the lock assembly engages but the board still shows a dE error, the secondary door switch may have failed.

Door Switch — Top-Load (FFTW)
Top-load models have a lid switch mounted under the top panel, actuated by a pin or striker on the lid when it closes. The lid switch controls the spin cycle — the washer will agitate with the lid open (on some models) but will not spin. This is a safety feature to prevent injury from the spinning tub.
Top-Load Lid Switch Symptoms
- Washer fills and agitates but does not spin — lid switch in the spin circuit has failed open
- Washer does not start at all — lid switch in the motor circuit has failed open
- Washer spins with the lid open — lid switch stuck closed (safety hazard)
Lid Switch Test
Unplug. Locate the switch under the top panel (raise the top by pressing spring clips at the front). Disconnect the wire connector. Multimeter on continuity: with the striker pressing the switch (lid closed position), should show continuity. Without the striker, open circuit.
Water Temperature Switch (FFTW Top-Load)
Some top-load models with physical rotary or push-button temperature selection use a mechanical water temperature switch that directs the inlet valve to fill with hot, warm, or cold water. If the washer always fills with cold water regardless of the temperature setting, this switch may have failed — or the hot water supply may be off.
Temperature Switch Test
Unplug. Access the switch behind the console. Disconnect wires. In each position (hot, warm, cold), test continuity between the appropriate terminals per the wiring diagram in the service sheet.

Replacing the Top-Load Lid Switch
- Unplug the washer.
- Press the spring clips at the front of the top panel using a putty knife. Lift the top panel and prop it open.
- Locate the lid switch — mounted under the top panel near the lid hinge, with a protruding actuator arm.
- Disconnect the wire connector (under the top or routed down to the control area).
- Remove the mounting screws (1–2 Phillips).
- Install the new switch in the same position.
- Lower the top panel and snap the spring clips.
- Plug in. Close the lid and run a spin cycle.
Tools: Putty knife, Phillips #2, multimeter. Time: 10–20 minutes.
The Real Cost of DIY

IQ-Touch vs. Physical Switches
On EFLS IQ-Touch models, the temperature and cycle selections are handled by the capacitive touch panel and control board — there are no physical selector switches for temperature. If the IQ-Touch panel is unresponsive, that is a control board issue, not a switch issue.
FAQ
My Frigidaire washer fills but won't spin — is it the lid switch?
On top-load models, yes — the lid switch prevents spin when the lid is open. Test the switch with a multimeter. On front-load models, the door lock assembly is the equivalent.
Does my EFLS front-load have a separate door switch?
Most EFLS models integrate the switch into the door lock assembly. Some have an additional plunger switch on the frame — check your model.
Why does my top-load washer always fill with cold water?
Check: (1) hot water faucet valve open? (2) hot water supply hose connected to hot inlet? (3) temperature switch failed? Test the switch with multimeter.
Can the lid switch be a safety hazard if stuck closed?
Yes — the washer spins with the lid open, risking injury from the rotating tub. Replace immediately.
