Frigidaire Washer Sensor Replacement Guide — Cost, Signs & DIY Tips
Frigidaire washers use two primary sensor types: a water level pressure switch (controls how much water enters the tub) and an NTC thermistor (monitors water temperature). The EFLS front-load platform may also have a tachometer (RPM sensor) on the motor for spin speed control.
Water Level Pressure Switch
The pressure switch is mounted at the top of the washer frame, connected to the tub by a small-diameter rubber or silicone hose (the pressure hose). As water fills the tub, the water level increases air pressure in the hose. The switch detects specific pressure thresholds corresponding to different water levels and signals the control board to stop filling.
Pressure Switch Symptoms
- E35 error — water level sensor fault. The board reads an unexpected pressure
- Washer overfills — the switch does not detect the full level, so the board keeps the inlet valve open
- Washer does not fill at all — the switch reads "full" even when the tub is empty (pinched or disconnected pressure hose is the most common cause)
- Insufficient water for the load — the switch detects "full" too early on Auto-Load Sensing cycles
Before Replacing
Check the pressure hose — a kinked, cracked, or disconnected hose mimics a switch failure. The hose runs from the switch (top of frame) to a fitting on the outer tub. Inspect its entire length. Also blow gently into the disconnected hose — if air does not flow freely, the hose is blocked.

NTC Thermistor
Measures water temperature. The board uses this reading to control the water inlet valve (hot vs. cold fill) and to verify the heater (on models with a tub heater for Sanitize cycles) is reaching the target temperature.
Thermistor Symptoms
- Water always cold regardless of temperature setting — thermistor reads falsely warm, so the board does not call for hot water fill
- Water always hot — thermistor reads falsely cold, so the board fills with hot water only
- Sanitize cycle fails — the board cannot verify the water reached the required temperature (usually 150°F+)
Testing
Multimeter on resistance at room temperature: approximately 10,000–15,000 ohms (NTC). Place in warm water — resistance should decrease. Infinite or zero = failed.

Replacing the Pressure Switch
- Unplug the washer. Remove the top panel (3 rear screws on EFLS).
- Locate the pressure switch at the top-left or top-right of the frame — a small box with a hose connection and wire connector.
- Disconnect the wire connector and pull the pressure hose off the barb fitting.
- Remove the mounting screw(s) and pull the switch out.
- Install the new switch. Connect the pressure hose and wire connector.
- Replace the top panel. Plug in and run a cycle to verify correct fill level.
Time: 15–20 minutes. Tools: Phillips #2.

E21 Is Usually Not a Sensor Issue
The E21 drain error is the most common Frigidaire washer code. Despite being an "error code," it is almost always caused by debris in the coin trap filter, not a sensor or pump failure. Clean the filter first. The pressure switch can contribute to an E21 if it reads "water still present" when the tub has drained — but this is far less common than a clogged filter.
The Real Cost of DIY

Perfect Balance Shock Absorbers
While this is not a sensor issue, the Perfect Balance suspension (4 shock absorbers) affects sensor readings indirectly. Worn shock absorbers allow excessive tub movement during spin, which can disconnect or kink the pressure hose, causing erratic water level readings. If you are replacing sensors and notice vibration during spin, inspect the shocks (part# 5304485917, sold in pairs of 2).
FAQ
What does E35 mean on my Frigidaire washer?
Water level sensor fault. Check the pressure hose first — it may be kinked, cracked, or disconnected. If hose is good, replace the pressure switch.
Why does my Frigidaire washer fill with cold water only?
NTC thermistor reading falsely warm. Test with multimeter (~10,000-15,000 ohms at room temp). Also check the hot water supply — is the faucet valve open?
Is E21 a sensor error?
No — E21 is a drain error. Clean the coin trap filter (lower-left access door on front-load) first. Sensor-related fill issues are E35 or E11.
What are the shock absorbers on a Frigidaire washer?
Part of the Perfect Balance anti-vibration system. Four absorbers dampen tub movement during spin. Worn absorbers cause vibration and can affect sensor readings.
