Frigidaire Washer Motor Replacement Guide — Cost, Signs & DIY Tips
Frigidaire EFLS front-load washers use a rear-mounted induction motor with a belt drive system. The motor sits at the bottom rear of the machine, connected to the drum via a poly-V belt (commonly part# 137315300). Before condemning the motor, check the belt — it is a much cheaper component ($15–$25) that produces similar symptoms when it breaks or slips.
FFTW top-load washers use a different motor platform (typically a reversing motor with a transmission for agitate/spin). The access and replacement procedure differs.
Belt vs. Motor: Which Failed?
| Symptom | Likely Cause |
|---|---|
| Drum does not spin or agitate, motor hums | Belt broken or slipped off |
| Squealing during spin that stops when drum stops | Belt worn/glazed — slipping |
| No motor sound at all when cycle starts | Motor dead or board not sending signal |
| Burning smell from the rear | Motor winding overheating or belt friction |
| E52 error code | Motor circuit fault — could be motor, board, or wiring |

Testing the Motor
- Unplug the washer. Access the motor from the rear (remove rear panel — multiple Phillips screws).
- Disconnect the motor wire connector (multi-pin).
- Multimeter on resistance between motor winding terminals: run winding should read 2–8 ohms, start/auxiliary winding 5–15 ohms. Infinite = open winding.
- Test for ground: terminal to motor housing. Any reading = grounded motor.
- Spin the motor shaft by hand — should turn freely without grinding.
Motor Cost
| Component | Cost |
|---|---|
| OEM motor (EFLS) | $100–$250 |
| Belt (137315300) | $15–$25 |
| Belt tensioner spring | $10–$20 |
| Professional labor | $150–$250 |
| DIY total | $50–$250 |
| Professional total | $200–$500 |

EFLS Front-Load Motor Replacement
- Unplug the washer. Pull it away from the wall.
- Remove the rear panel (Phillips screws around perimeter).
- Remove the belt from the motor pulley and drum pulley. Release tension by pressing the spring-loaded tensioner.
- Disconnect the motor wire connector.
- Remove the motor mounting bolts (3–4 bolts securing the motor to the tub base).
- Install the new motor. Tighten mounting bolts evenly.
- Route the new belt around the drum pulley and motor pulley. The tensioner maintains correct tension automatically.
- Reconnect the wire connector. Replace the rear panel.
- Run a spin-only cycle to verify the motor operates and the belt tracks correctly.
Tools: Phillips #2, socket wrench set, multimeter. Time: 35–50 minutes.

Belt Tension and Replacement
The Frigidaire EFLS uses a spring-loaded tensioner that maintains belt tension automatically — there is no manual adjustment. If the belt squeals during spin, the tensioner spring has weakened. Replace the tensioner ($10–$20) alongside the belt. A new belt on a weak tensioner will slip and squeal within weeks.
If the belt breaks, inspect the motor pulley and drum pulley for damage. A rough or chipped pulley will destroy a new belt quickly.
The Real Cost of DIY

E52 Error Code
E52 indicates a motor circuit fault. This can be the motor itself, the wiring harness between the board and motor, or the motor control output on the board. Diagnose by testing motor windings (see above). If windings are good, check for voltage at the motor connector during a cycle attempt — voltage present but motor not running = motor. No voltage = board or wiring.
FAQ
Should I replace the belt before the motor?
Always check the belt first. A broken $15-$25 belt mimics a failed motor. Inspect the belt before spending $100+ on a motor.
What is the E52 error on a Frigidaire washer?
Motor circuit fault. Could be the motor, wiring, or board. Test motor windings first — if good, check for voltage at the motor connector.
Can I replace just the belt on my Frigidaire washer?
Yes — rear panel access, release tensioner, swap belt. 15-minute repair. Replace the tensioner too if the belt was squealing.
How long does a Frigidaire washer motor last?
10-15 years typical. Overloading and unbalanced loads stress the motor. The belt and tensioner typically fail first.
