Frigidaire Refrigerator dF: Defrost System Failure
What You Will Notice
Before dF appears, your refrigerator shows progressive symptoms: fresh food section running warmer than setpoint, ice forming on the freezer back wall that was not there before, the compressor running continuously instead of cycling, and frost accumulating around the freezer door gasket. dF confirms the defrost cycle cannot keep the evaporator coils clear of ice.

How Frigidaire Defrost Works
Every 8-12 hours, the control board initiates a defrost cycle. It shuts off the compressor and evaporator fan, then energizes a defrost heater (a resistance wire wound around the evaporator coils). The heater melts accumulated frost, and meltwater drains through a channel to a pan above the compressor where it evaporates.
A defrost thermostat (bi-metal sensor clamped to the evaporator tubing) monitors coil temperature. When coils reach approximately 45-50F, the thermostat signals the board to end defrost and resume cooling. If the thermostat never signals because the heater never warmed the coils, or if the board never initiated defrost, ice accumulates until dF triggers.
Three Components to Test
Defrost heater (part: model-specific, $25-$50). Access requires removing the freezer rear panel. The heater is a glass or metal tube that wraps under or alongside the evaporator coils. Measure resistance with the refrigerator unplugged: expect 20-60 ohms. Infinite means the heater element has burned open.
Defrost thermostat ($10-$25). Clamped to the evaporator tubing. At room temperature, it should show continuity (zero ohms). At freezer temperatures, it opens (infinite). If it reads infinite at room temperature, it has failed open and prevents the heater from receiving power even when the board commands defrost.
Control board defrost relay. The board initiates defrost by closing a relay that connects the heater circuit. A failed relay prevents defrost initiation. This is the least common cause.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Refrigerant (R-134a/R-600a) requires EPA certification to handle. Improper discharge is a federal violation and health hazard. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Repair Steps
Heater replacement: Unplug. Remove freezer contents and rear panel. Note how the heater mounts (clips or brackets). Disconnect the wire connectors. Remove the old heater and install the new one in the same routing. Reconnect and reassemble.
Thermostat replacement: Unplug. Access behind rear panel. Unclip the thermostat from the evaporator tubing. Disconnect the two-wire connector. Snap the new thermostat onto the same tubing location.
Before reassembling, manually defrost any ice buildup by leaving the refrigerator unplugged with doors open for several hours. Do not chip ice off the coils with tools, which risks puncturing evaporator tubing and releasing refrigerant.

Gallery/Professional EvenTemp Difference
Gallery and Professional models with EvenTemp have separate evaporator and defrost systems for each compartment. dF on these models may specify which compartment's defrost has failed. The fresh food section has its own smaller evaporator with its own heater and thermostat.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

FAQ
How long can I run the refrigerator with dF? The refrigerator continues cooling, but efficiency drops as ice builds. Within two to four weeks, ice fully blocks the evaporator and the unit loses cooling capacity entirely.
Can I manually defrost and keep using it? As a temporary measure, yes. Unplug for 24 hours to melt ice, then plug back in. The defrost system will still not work, so ice returns in 1-2 weeks.
Is dF the same as H1 or HI? No. dF is defrost failure (ice buildup). H1/HI is high temperature alarm (temperature exceeded setpoint). dF can eventually cause H1/HI as ice blocks airflow and temperatures rise.
Frigidaire refrigerator icing up? dF defrost repair is straightforward. Our technicians carry heaters and thermostats. Book a repair.
