The short answer
Water inside the cabinet is nearly always the defrost drain, and where that drain is depends on which kind of cabinet you own. A direct-cool cabinet drains from the base of the cold plate in the fridge liner. A frost-free cabinet drains from a trough under the evaporator behind the rear freezer panel. Both end in the same evaporation tray on top of the compressor, and both block for the same reason.
What you are seeing
- A pool of water under the crisper drawers — Note: The defrost drain is blocked and meltwater is collecting at the lowest point of the liner instead.
- Water running down the inside of the back wall of the fridge — Note: On a frost-free cabinet, the freezer drain trough has iced over and the melt is finding another route.
- Water on the floor at the front whenever the door is opened — Note: The cabinet is tilted forward, so meltwater travels across the liner floor instead of to the drain.
- A puddle behind the cabinet — Note: The evaporation tray on top of the compressor is cracked, displaced or overflowing.
- One large flood after a power cut or a deliberate defrost — Note: Expected behaviour rather than a fault: everything melted at once and the tray could not keep up.
- Beads of water on the outside of the cabinet near a door edge — Note: Room air reaching a cold surface through a seal leak, which is a door problem.

What to check, in order

- Look at the back wall of the fridge liner and at the rear freezer panel — Why: This tells you which kind of cabinet you have and therefore which drain to look for.
- Put a spirit level on the top of the cabinet — Why: A forward tilt explains front-lip water at once and also explains why a marginal drain never clears itself.
- Find the drain hole and see whether water is standing in it — Why: A visibly full drain channel confirms the blockage without any dismantling.
- Pull the cabinet out and look at the tray on top of the compressor — Why: This is the only cause that puts water behind the appliance, so it either explains everything or nothing.
Checks you can do safely
- Mop the water up, dry the area and note over the next day exactly where it returns and whether it is inside the cabinet or on the floor. — Tools: towels — Time: a day of observation
- Put a spirit level on the cabinet top and adjust the feet until it sits dead level or a hair back, so meltwater runs towards the drain rather than the door. — Tools: spirit level, adjustable wrench — Time: twenty minutes

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the refrigerator before clearing a drain, removing a rear freezer panel or handling the evaporation tray, and mop standing water off the floor before restoring power. The start relay and overload sit on the compressor pins at mains potential whenever the unit is plugged in. Never push wire, a coat hanger or a skewer into a drain hole: refrigerant tubing is bonded directly behind the liner and a puncture ends the cabinet. Never chip ice from a plate or an evaporator with a tool. Get help before moving a top-heavy cabinet. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. Where the service line falls
The drain runs clear, the cabinet is level and the seals pass a paper test, and water still collects inside every day. A frost-free cabinet re-ices its drain trough within days of being cleared, which points at the defrost heater or its cut-out rather than at a blockage. Water appears behind the cabinet with an intact and correctly seated evaporation tray. The liner is cracked at the base of the drain, which lets water into the insulation and cannot be sealed reliably. You find an oily residue with the water rather than clean or stale meltwater, which points at the sealed system and is regulated work.
