The short answer
On a compact refrigerator the location of the water is the diagnosis. Water pooling inside under the crisper is a blocked defrost drain; water on the floor at the front is a cabinet tilted forward; water at the back is the evaporation tray. All three are owner-fixable, and none of them mean the sealed system is leaking anything.
What you are seeing
- A pool of water sits in the bottom of the liner under the crisper — Note: The designed drain hole at the base of the cold plate is blocked. This is the most common leak on the class.
- Water runs out at the front lip whenever the door is opened — Note: The cabinet is tilted forward, so meltwater travels the wrong way across the liner floor.
- A puddle appears on the floor behind the unit — Note: The evaporation tray on top of the compressor has cracked, shifted or overflowed.
- A single large flood after a power cut or after the unit was switched off — Note: The frost blanket melted all at once. That is expected behaviour, not a fault.
- Beads of water on the outside of the cabinet near the door edge — Note: Room air is reaching a cold surface through a seal leak, which is a door problem.
- Water inside on the shelves with no frost anywhere — Note: Condensation from warm damp food or open containers rather than a leak in the machine.

What to check, in order
- Find exactly where the water is before you touch anything — Why: Inside under the crisper, on the floor at the front, or on the floor at the back. Each location points at a different cause, and this one observation does most of the work.
- Put a spirit level on the top of the cabinet — Why: A forward tilt explains front-lip water immediately and also explains why a marginal drain never clears itself.
- Look for the drain hole at the base of the cold plate and see whether water is standing in it — Why: A visibly full drain channel is a confirmed blockage.
- Pull the unit out and look at the tray on top of the compressor — Why: Cracks and displacement are obvious once you can see it, and it is the only cause that puts water behind the unit.
- Close the door on a strip of paper at four points — Why: A leaking seal is not usually the leak itself, but it is what keeps the drain permanently overloaded.
Checks you can do safely
- Mop the water up, dry the area, and note over the next day exactly where it returns and whether it is inside or on the floor. — Tools: towels — Time: a day of observation
- Level the cabinet front to back and side to side, setting it dead level or a hair back so meltwater runs towards the plate rather than the door. — Tools: spirit level, adjustable wrench — Time: a quarter of an hour
- Unplug the unit, empty it, and clear the drain hole at the base of the cold plate by flushing warm water through it with a turkey baster. Do not force wire into the hole. — Tools: turkey baster, warm water, towels — Time: half an hour
- Complete a full manual defrost with the door propped open and towels underneath, so the drain starts from a clean state. — Tools: towels, a shallow tray — Time: four to eight hours
- Pull the unit clear of the wall, seat the evaporation tray flat on the compressor and check it for cracks and for debris holding it off level. — Tools: none — Time: a quarter of an hour
- Warm any rolled section of door gasket with a hair dryer on its lowest setting, reshape it, and repeat the paper test. — Tools: hair dryer, paper strip — Time: twenty minutes
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the unit before clearing a drain, reaching behind the cold plate or handling the evaporation tray, and mop up standing water on the floor before you plug anything back in. A start relay and overload sit on the compressor pins at mains potential, directly above the tray you may be reaching for. Never push wire, a coat hanger or a skewer into the drain hole: the tubing behind the plate carries refrigerant and is easily punctured. Do not run the unit with panels removed, and never chip at frost with a tool. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. Where the service line falls
The drain runs clear, the cabinet is level and the seal passes the paper test, and water still collects inside every day. Water is appearing at the back on a unit with no plumbed connection and the evaporation tray is intact and correctly seated. The liner is cracked at the base of the plate, which cannot be sealed reliably and lets water into the insulation. The cabinet smells strongly of stale water after the drain has been cleared, which usually means water has already soaked into the foam. You find an oily residue with the water rather than clean or stale meltwater, which points at the sealed system and is regulated work.
