Before you open anything

Unplug the cabinet before removing any panel or reaching behind it. The start relay and overload sit on the compressor pins at mains potential whenever it is plugged in, and a capacitor can hold a charge after the plug is out. Never chip frost or ice with a knife or a screwdriver: on a compact cabinet of this kind the refrigerant tubing is bonded into the wall directly behind the liner, and a puncture ends the appliance. Which of these are owner-fixable
Everything above is owner-fixable except the last class. Defrosting, clearing a drain, levelling a cabinet, re-squaring a reversed door, reshaping a gasket and improving clearance need no parts and no meter. Call a technician when a relay, overload or thermostat has to be confirmed, because that requires a meter on terminals that are live whenever the unit is plugged in. Call immediately, and leave the unit unplugged, if it trips a breaker or an outlet protection device, or if there is scorching or a burning smell near the compressor terminals. Treat anything involving the sealed refrigerant circuit as regulated work: an oily film or a hiss at the tubing is not an owner repair under any circumstances. Weigh any quoted repair against a replacement cabinet early.
