The short answer
Before anything else, establish which machine you have. Most compact refrigerators sold under a licensed housewares badge have no plumbed ice maker at all: ice comes from a twist tray sitting in a small freezer box moulded against the cold plate. If that is your unit, poor ice is a temperature story and the fix is almost always free. If yours is a variant with a water connection, the diagnosis is completely different and starts at the supply.
What you are seeing
- Ice in the tray is soft, cloudy or never sets hard — Note: The freezer box is not reaching a freezing temperature, which is a plate and thermostat question.
- The tray is welded into the box by a sheet of ice underneath — Note: Water spilled during filling and froze around the tray. Common and harmless once thawed.
- Ice forms but shrinks and disappears over a week — Note: Sublimation in a box that cycles above and below freezing, or a door that is opened constantly.
- Frost coats the freezer box faster than ice forms in the tray — Note: Humid air is reaching the plate. Look at the door seal before you look at anything else.
- There is a water line at the back but no ice at all — Note: You have a plumbed variant. The supply, the shut-off valve and the fill tube are the place to start.
- The whole cabinet is warm and the tray never freezes — Note: This is not an ice problem. The cooling-failure page ranks the causes for a warm cabinet.

What to check, in order
- Look at the back of the unit for a water connection — Why: This single observation decides which half of the diagnosis applies, and skipping it wastes the whole session.
- Open the door and look at the cold plate and the outside of the freezer box — Why: Frost between the two is the most common cause and it is visible without tools.
- Leave a thermometer in the freezer box overnight with the door shut — Why: A number is the only way to know whether the box is genuinely freezing or hovering just under it.
- Lift the tray out and check whether the box floor is level and clear — Why: A tray tilted by an ice sheet under it explains soft or half-formed cubes on its own.
- Close the door on a strip of paper at four points — Why: A seal that leaks feeds frost onto the plate continuously, and that frost is cause number one.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the unit before removing any panel or reaching behind the cold plate. Never chip or lever ice away from the plate or the freezer box with a knife, a screwdriver or any other tool: the plate is thin aluminium bonded to refrigerant tubing, and a puncture ends the cabinet. Do not use a heat gun or boiling water on the liner, which deforms permanently at low temperature. On a plumbed variant, close the shut-off valve before disconnecting anything, and remember that a compressor start relay sits at mains potential whenever the unit is plugged in. Where the service line falls
The plate is clear, the door seals, the dial is at its coldest, and an overnight thermometer reading in the freezer box is still nowhere near 0 °F (−18 °C) or below. The compressor clicks and stops in a repeating pattern rather than running steadily, which needs a meter on live terminals. Frost returns as a heavy blanket within days of a full defrost on a cabinet whose door passes the paper test. You have a plumbed variant and the fill tube is frozen solid every time you clear it, which points at a valve leaking past its seat. The repair quoted involves the sealed refrigerant circuit, which is regulated work and rarely economic on a compact cabinet.
