Odour in an Essentiell appliance is a maintenance complaint with a mechanical exception. The maintenance half is the filter, the sump, the seal and the spray arms. The exception is standing water, which no amount of cleaning fixes, and which is the reason a thoroughly cleaned machine can smell again in days.
What owners actually observe
- Smell that transfers onto clean crockery — Soil is being recirculated, which makes this a filter and drain issue.
- A musty smell from the cabinet around the machine, not inside it — A slow leak wetting joinery, which is a different and more expensive fault.
- A drain-like smell that worsens after the machine stands unused — Stagnating water in the sump or a dry trap at the waste.
- Standing water visible in the base — Stop cleaning and treat the drain: the smell is a symptom of that.
- NEAR MISS: a hot plastic or fishy smell while the machine runs — That is electrical, not biological: stop using the machine and see the electrical page.
Causes, most likely first
- Filter and sump holding soil — First, and by a clear margin: it is where the machine is designed to collect what it removes, and because a loaded filter turns every cycle into a recirculation of the last one. Clean it before judging anything else about the machine.
- Water not fully draining — Second: a compact drain run with a flat section keeps a reservoir the owner never sees.
- Drain hose with no high loop, or a dry trap at the waste — Less often, third: an install that lets waste gas back into the machine gives a drain smell that no internal cleaning can touch.
The order of checks, and why
- Lift the filter out and look at the sump underneath — What you find explains the smell and usually the results complaint as well.
- Look for standing water at the end of a cycle — Anything more than a film means the drain page is the one to work before cleaning again.
- Look at how the drain hose rises before it joins the waste — No loop, or a flat run, means the smell is coming in from the plumbing.

- Wipe the gasket channel and the door bottom edge — A cloth and a cotton bud for the corners where biofilm lives.
