In one paragraph
An Essentiell machine that trips its protection, warms its own plug or gives a tingle when touched has crossed out of diagnosis and into isolation: switch it off at the breaker and leave it off. The ranked causes below exist to tell you who to call rather than what to buy, because every one of them is measured on live terminals in a wet machine.
What the machine is telling you
- Lights in the kitchen dim when the machine heats — A supply or connection that cannot carry the load the heater draws.
- Visible water around the cord entry or the base of the machine — Water and mains wiring together is the pairing behind most of these symptoms.
- The panel behaves oddly and the machine trips intermittently — Intermittent electrical faults are more dangerous than constant ones, because they get tolerated.
- The breaker or the residual-current device trips when the machine runs — Often at a specific point in the cycle, which is itself a clue.
- NEAR MISS: a static click from the door handle on a dry day — Static is not an earth fault and does not trip anything.
What is usually behind it, in order
- Water reaching wiring, the cord entry or a junction — Most likely on this platform: a slow leak wets a connection and the machine starts tripping, which looks like an electrical failure because it is one.
- Heating element breaking down to earth — Next in order: it is the classic cause of a reproducible mid-cycle trip and it is a definite replace, not a maybe.
- Plug, outlet or cord connection overheating — Less often, third: it is the most common real electrical fault on any plugged appliance and the one an owner can see: a loose or damaged connection heats under load.
- Board or suppression component failing — Lower down the list: it is less common than the heater and the pump.
The order of checks, and why
- Check for any sign of a leak at the base or under the cabinet — If the machine trips and the base is wet, the two facts are the same fault and it needs attention before anything is reconnected.
- Note when in the cycle it trips, to the minute if you can — A trip that always arrives at the heat phase is the single most useful thing you can tell a technician.
- With the power off, look at the plug, the outlet and the visible cord — Discolouration, a smell of hot plastic, or a cord flattened by the cabinet are all reasons to stop using the machine immediately.
- Do not open the machine to look — A board that has failed this way may look perfect and is still live.
Owner-side checks, step by step
- Switch the machine off at the breaker and unplug it if the plug is accessible and cool — Isolation first: there is no diagnosis worth doing on a live machine with these symptoms.
About 5 min
- Look at the plug and outlet for discolouration, melting or a hot smell — Do not touch a plug that is hot.
Tools: torchAbout 5 min
- Check the visible cord for flattening, cuts or scorching — A cord damaged by the cabinet is a replacement, never a tape-and-hope.
Tools: torchAbout 10 min
- Note exactly when in the cycle the trip happens, and write it down — Fill, wash, heat or drain: this is the most valuable evidence you can collect.
About 10 min
- STOP HERE. Do not open the machine and do not reset repeatedly — Every one of the remaining causes is measured on live mains in a wet appliance.
