Dryers combine heat, moving air and lint, which is why their electrical symptoms deserve more respect than the same symptoms on another appliance. A trip, a burning smell, a hot plug, a scorched outlet or a cabinet too hot to touch all mean stop. Because these units are squeezed into a cabinet run with almost no clearance, the supply end of the installation and the duct are the first things to examine, both with the power off.
What you are seeing
- A smell of scorched fabric or lint — Lint in contact with a heat source.
- A hot, discoloured or melted plug, or a scorched outlet — A resistive connection at mains current, and a fire risk in itself.
- On a gas build, any smell of gas at all — Leave the building and call from outside.
- A burning or hot-plastic smell while it runs — Overheating insulation or scorching lint.
- NEAR MISS: the faint warm smell of a new machine on its first loads — Manufacturing residue on a new element can smell briefly.
What is usually behind it, in order
- Lint and restricted airflow driving overheating — The leading cause here: a dryer sheds heat through the air it moves, so a restricted duct makes the cabinet run hotter than it was designed to, and lint is combustible. Clear the filter, the housing and the duct before the machine is used again.
- Wiring, terminal block or duct installation wrong — Second most likely here: this is worth raising whenever a machine has misbehaved since the day it was fitted.
- Plug, outlet, cord or terminal block overheating — Less often, third: dryer circuits carry a large current, and a loose terminal or a tired outlet heats until something melts.
Where to start, and what follows
- Clear the filter and the full duct run, then feel the cabinet — A cabinet that is merely warm is normal; one too hot to touch with a clear duct is a fault.
- Ask when the symptom started relative to installation — Problems from day one point at the installation rather than at the machine.
- With the circuit off, inspect the plug, outlet and visible cord — Discolouration, melted plastic or a smell of hot plastic mean the machine stays off until it is repaired.
Owner-side checks, step by step
- Switch the circuit off and stop using the machine — Isolation first.
About 5 min
- Inspect the plug, outlet and visible cord with the power off — Do not touch a hot plug until the circuit is off and it has cooled.
Tools: torchAbout 15 min
- Write down when the trip or smell occurs in the cycle — Start, heat phase or end: it narrows the circuit.
About 10 min
- STOP HERE. Do not open the machine, and do not keep resetting — Every remaining cause is a live measurement inside a lint-filled cabinet.
Safety before diagnosis
Safety
Isolate first, diagnose second, and treat lint as fuel. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, because a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. allowlist:unplug-before-service
When this becomes a service call
Book the visit as soon as the symptom is confirmed and describe it plainly: tripping, burning smell, or a cabinet too hot to touch. That wording changes the priority of the appointment.

What this page does not cover
Read this as generalized information about an Ellipse machine. The badge spans more than one platform, and a vented machine, a condenser machine and a washer-dryer combination fail differently, so nothing here is a model procedure.
