The answer, first
An Ellipse appliance that tumbles without heat is, more often than owners expect, an airflow problem rather than a dead element: a restricted duct overheats the machine, the limit device opens, and the drum keeps turning cold. Because an apartment-format machine inherits every compromise of the space it fits, the duct route and the lint path come first. On a gas build the igniter and flame sensor join the list, and on a condenser or heat-pump build the heat system is sealed and different again.
What you are seeing
- The cycle runs noticeably longer, or the machine runs repeatedly — An auto-dry cycle that cannot reach its target keeps going or keeps restarting.
- On a condenser or combination build, the clothes are warm but still wet — That is a condenser or airflow fault rather than a heating fault.
- The drum turns for the whole cycle but the clothes stay cold and damp — Heat is absent while the motor and the timer work normally.
- NEAR MISS: the machine will not start at all — A dead machine is a start fault, not a heat fault.
Causes, most likely first
- Duct too long, crushed, or the wrong kind entirely — First, and by a clear margin: flexible foil and plastic duct crushes behind the machine and traps lint in every ridge, which produces exactly the same restriction as a blockage.
- Restricted lint filter, duct or vent hood — Second: lint accumulates where the duct bends and at the outside flap, and the restriction builds over months until the machine starts protecting itself every cycle.
- Heating element, igniter or gas valve failed — Third in order: an open element on an electric build, or an igniter or valve coil on a gas one, removes the heat while everything else keeps working.
The order of checks, and why
- Pull the machine out far enough to see the duct run — A flattened elbow or a long sagging flexible run is the explanation, and it is an installation fix.
- Clear the filter, then check for airflow at the outside hood — Strong warm air at the hood means the duct is clear; weak or cool air with a hot cabinet is the fault.
- Listen in the first minute of the cycle — On gas, a click then a whoosh means ignition; silence means the igniter circuit.

- Clear the lint trap housing below the filter — A vacuum crevice tool reaches what the filter misses.

- Disconnect the duct and run the machine briefly into the room — If it heats properly with the duct off, the duct is the fault.

- Check the breaker for a partial trip, and reset it once — On a double-pole circuit one side can open and leave the motor running.

- STOP HERE before testing an element, a fuse or a gas valve — Those are live measurements, and on a gas build the valve and the burner are not owner-serviceable at all.

The airflow half of this fault belongs to the owner and it resolves a surprising share of no-heat complaints. Deciding between an element, a fuse, a thermostat and a control needs a meter, so that half is a technician job.
