The short answer
Check the cabinet temperature first. Then try a full power-off reset, look for a control lock, and rule out demonstration mode on a machine whose panel works but which is not cooling. Only after that is a board fault likely.
What the panel is doing
- Blank display, cabinet still cold — A panel or display fault.
- Blank display, cabinet warming — Supply or main board.
- Panel bright and responsive, nothing cooling — Suspect demonstration mode.
- Buttons ignored — A control lock.
- A code shown with the machine still running — It is reporting a sensor or a component.
- Not this fault: a temperature that drifts a degree either way — Normal cycling.
Ranked by what is found
- Control lock engaged — First, and free to clear.
- Demonstration or showroom mode set by accident — Second, and it perfectly imitates a dead machine.
- Controller hung after a power interruption — Third, and a reset clears it.
- A genuine condition the machine is reporting as a code — Fourth.
- Display or membrane panel failed — Fifth.
- Main board or its supply failed — Last.
Work through it in this order
- Put a thermometer in the cabinet — It tells you how urgent this is.
- Switch off at the breaker for a few minutes and restore — It clears a hung controller.
- Hold the candidate lock button — Control locks are set by holding.
- Look for a demonstration indication on the panel — It is the one cause nobody expects.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Keep the refrigerator at or below forty degrees Fahrenheit and the freezer at or below zero degrees Fahrenheit, and check both with a thermometer rather than trusting a display that is already suspect. Never prop a door switch open to test a panel.
When to call
Call when a reset, the lock check and the demonstration-mode check have all failed, or when the display is dead and the cabinet is warming. Quote the code and say whether the machine is still cooling - it decides both the urgency and the parts. On a value-tier refrigerator, get the board price before agreeing.
