The short answer
A panel where some keys work and others never respond is a failing membrane keypad, which is the leading control fault on mounted units. A panel that responds to everything but will not start is usually a lock mode or a door that is not being seen as closed.
What the panel is doing
- One row or column of keys does nothing — The signature of a membrane failure rather than a board failure.
- A key responds only when pressed hard or repeatedly — The same fault, earlier in its life.
- Display lit, a lock legend showing, nothing starts — A lock mode is active and is doing its job.
- The unit beeps at the start key and cancels — Very often the door is not being registered as closed.
- Display segments missing or dim — Display driver or the board behind it.
- Not this fault: everything is dark and dead — That belongs on the will-not-start page, not here.

- Membrane keypad degraded by heat and steam from the range below — First, and specific to this install. Zones of dead keys, worsening over months.
- Child lock or demo mode active — Second: free to clear, and it mimics a total control failure.
- Door not registering as closed — Third. The control refuses to run and the owner blames the keypad.
- Control board or its display driver failing — Fourth, and it usually shows as missing segments rather than dead keys.

The order to work in
- Press every key in turn and map which ones respond — A map of dead zones is the diagnosis; a general impression is not.
- Clear any lock or demo mode from the panel legend — Instant, free and frequently the whole answer.
- Open and firmly close the door, then retry the start key — Separates a door-sensing refusal from a control one.
- Cycle the breaker once and re-map the keys — Distinguishes a latched state from a physical keypad failure.
Owner checks
- Work along the whole keypad and note every key that fails — Dead keys in a line point at the membrane; scattered failures rarely do.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off; in a microwave that charge is lethal and the case therefore stays on. Never spray cleaner directly at a control panel, and do not run the unit with the door held or wedged: the latch system is what tells the control it is safe to energise.
When to call
Call when a mapped zone of keys is dead, when display segments are missing, or when the unit refuses to start with a properly latched door and no lock set. Those all live behind the case. Call immediately, and stop using the appliance, if the panel behaves erratically together with any burning smell or visible scorching around the door frame.
