The short answer
Control complaints dominate this appliance, and most of them are not control failures: spills, an active lock and thermal cut-outs after heavy use account for the bulk. Working safely around a built-in cooktop
Safety
Switch the cooktop off at the breaker before anything is lifted or unscrewed. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not use a cooktop with cracked glass, and if you smell gas near a gas version: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or your emergency number from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself.
What is owner work here
Cleaning the glass, clearing a control lock, cooling a hot cooktop, cycling the breaker once and restoring ventilation under the counter are all owner work. Seating a gas burner cap and drying it is as well. Everything under the countertop, every terminal, every element and every module is a service call, because the appliance has to come up out of its cut-out to reach any of it.
