The short answer
Arcing at an element, a breaker that trips the moment the oven is switched on, and any smell of gas are all reasons to stop using the appliance immediately. Disconnect it at the breaker, and for gas leave the building before calling. These are not faults to keep testing.
Stop if you see any of these
- Sparks or flashes from an element in the cavity — Switch off at the breaker; the element has failed dangerously.
- The breaker trips whenever the oven is switched on — A short circuit, and not a breaker that has gone weak.
- A smell of burning insulation from behind or below the oven — Terminal block or supply cable.
- Scorching or discoloration around the rear connection area — Evidence of a joint that has been running hot.
- A gas smell near the appliance — Leave the building first and call from outside.

What is usually behind it
- Element sheath cracked and arcing to the cavity — First for sparking, and it usually follows a spill or an abrasive cleaning.
- Terminal block loosened or burnt at the rear connection — Second, and the usual cause of burning smells and scorch marks.
- Supply cable pinched or chafed during installation — Third, and common in built-in installations.
- Moisture reaching a connection after cleaning — Fourth, and it produces trips that come and go.
- Gas connection or valve leaking — Fifth by frequency and first by urgency.
- Rodent or vermin damage to wiring behind a built-in oven — Last, but it does happen and it produces exactly these symptoms.
What to do, in order
- Switch the oven off at the breaker before anything else — Removing the energy comes before any inspection.
- For a gas smell, leave the building and call from outside — Nothing else on this page applies until that is done.
- Look for scorching at the rear connection area only if the oven is isolated and cool — A visual check, not a repair.
- Leave it isolated until it has been inspected — A fault that has arced once will arc again.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or your emergency number from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself. Do not reset a breaker repeatedly, do not tape or sleeve a damaged cable, and do not use an oven that has arced or scorched.
Who to call and when
Call an appliance technician for arcing elements, scorched terminal blocks and trips that happen only when the oven is switched on. Call an electrician if other circuits are affected, if the consumer unit itself is damaged, or if the supply cable to a built-in oven is the damaged part. Call the gas utility, from outside the building, for any gas smell. If there is fire in the cavity, keep the door closed and call the fire service.
