The short answer
Most leaks on these cabinets are meltwater, not supply water: a blocked defrost drain backs up, freezes into a sheet under the crisper drawers and then runs forward onto the floor. Clean, cold water arriving at the back of the cabinet is the other family, and it points at the supply line or the inlet valve.
What and where the water is
- A sheet of ice under the crisper drawers — The signature of a blocked defrost drain on this cabinet.
- Water appearing at the front edge of the floor after a defrost cycle — The same blockage, one stage further on.
- A steady drip at the rear near the water fitting — Supply plumbing rather than meltwater; the water is clean and cold.
- Water inside the freezer floor — Meltwater that froze before it reached the drain opening.
- A wet patch only after ice is dispensed — Points at the dispenser chute or the fill tube rather than the drain.
- Not this fault: beads of condensation around the door edge — That is a seal problem and belongs on the door and seal page.
Ranked by what we actually find
- Defrost drain blocked with food debris or frozen shut — First by a distance. Cheap to clear, and it explains the ice sheet and the floor puddle at once.
- Drain trough iced over after a heavy defrost — Second: the drain is open but the ice above it has not cleared, so the next cycle overflows.
- Supply line fitting or filter head weeping — Third, and always suspect it after a filter change or a cabinet move.
- Water inlet valve leaking at its body or connection — Fourth. It shows as a slow rear drip that is worse right after a fill.
- Cracked or displaced evaporation pan under the cabinet — Uncommon, but it leaves a puddle that never seems to come from anywhere.
- Ice maker fill tube overshooting the mould — Rare, and usually accompanied by an ice spike up the freezer wall.
The order to check
- Decide first whether the water is inside the cabinet or behind it — It splits the drain family from the plumbing family in one look.
- Lift the crisper drawers and look for an ice sheet — Confirms the drain branch immediately.
- Dry the area behind the cabinet and watch it for an hour — A rear drip that returns names the fitting; one that does not was a one-off spill.
- Check the pan under the cabinet last — It is the collector, so it tells you how much water arrived but not where from.

- Remove the crisper drawers and clear any ice sheet with warm water and a towel — Also proves the diagnosis, because the water you remove is the water you were mopping.

Water and power together
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Mop standing water off the floor before pulling a heavy cabinet out, close the supply shut-off before touching any fitting, and keep meltwater away from the harness that runs along the rear of the compartment.
When to call
Call once the drain has been flushed and it blocks again within weeks, because the trough or the drain heater behind the rear panel is then the candidate. Call as well for a supply fitting that still weeps after being re-seated, for a leak that only appears during the ice fill, or for any water that appears near the compressor compartment where the harness runs.
