The short answer
No ice on these cabinets is usually water that never arrives rather than an ice maker that has died. A frozen fill tube, a closed supply valve or a clogged filter head accounts for most of it, and the module itself is further down the list. What the empty mould looks like tells you which branch you are on.
What the freezer shows you
- The mould is completely dry — Water is not reaching the ice maker at all, which sends you up the supply chain.
- Cubes are hollow, small or crescent-shaped — A partial fill: restricted flow rather than no flow.
- A solid slab in the mould that never ejects — The fill happened and the harvest did not.
- Ice in the bin has fused into one lump — Slow production plus door-opening humidity, which is a symptom of a warm freezer more than of the ice maker.
- A spike of ice up the back wall of the freezer near the fill tube — The tube has frozen and overflowed, and it will freeze again after any thaw.
- Not this fault: water on the kitchen floor — That is a supply-line or defrost-drain leak and belongs on the water-leak page.

- Fill tube frozen at the freezer wall — First on this platform. A slow fill leaves a dribble in the tube, which freezes, which makes the next fill slower; the loop closes and the mould goes dry.
- Water supply restricted at the shut-off valve or the filter head — Second. A partly closed valve or a filter cartridge past its life throttles flow enough to make hollow cubes long before it stops them.
- Freezer running too warm for the harvest thermostat — Third, and the reason ice fails first when a freezer is struggling. A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below, and ice production drops off above that.
- Water inlet valve screen clogged or the valve itself weak — Fourth: sediment collects at the screen, and the valve then meters less water each fill.
- Ice maker module or its ejector motor failed — Fifth, and the only one people usually suspect first.
- Bail arm or shut-off lever left in the off position — Last on likelihood but first on embarrassment, and worth a glance before anything else.
Diagnostic order for this chain
- Look at the bail arm and the control panel ice setting — Free, instant, and it explains more dead ice makers than any component does.
- Inspect the mould and the fill tube — Dry, partly filled or slabbed tells you which of the three systems to chase.
- Check the freezer temperature before blaming the module — A warm freezer makes an innocent ice maker look faulty.
- Work back up the water path to the filter and the shut-off valve — Flow restrictions are cheap to find and cheap to fix.
Checks an owner can make
- Confirm the bail arm is down and any ice-off setting is cleared — A bumped arm during a freezer reorganisation is a common cause of a dead ice maker.

- Thaw the fill tube with a warm damp cloth — Do not chip at it; melting is the safe way and it also proves the diagnosis.

Working safely around the ice system
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Close the water supply before disturbing any fitting, and never use a hair dryer or a heat gun inside a freezer compartment where meltwater is pooling around a live harness. Leave the ice maker harness plug and its shut-off lever wired as designed.
Where the owner side ends
Call once water is proven to reach the mould and the harvest still does not run, because the remaining candidates are the module, its thermostat and the inlet valve. Call as well if the fill tube re-freezes within days of being thawed, if the freezer will not hold temperature, or if a supply fitting weeps after you have closed and reopened the shut-off valve.
