A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 °F (4 °C) or below, so treat a compartment that has been warmer than that for hours as a food-safety decision, not just a repair one.
When to hand it over
Call once a full manual defrost restores cold, because that result names a defrost component behind the rear panel rather than anything you can reach. Call as well if the evaporator fan is silent with no ice around it, if the condenser is clean and both compartments are still drifting up, or if you see oil residue on the tubing near the compressor.
