Check what it is touching
A refrigerator set into a cabinet opening has hard surfaces on three sides, and anything it touches becomes part of the sound. Check what the appliance is resting against and whether it rocks before looking at the mechanism.
What you are seeing
- A buzz or drone that seems to come from the cabinet rather than the appliance.
- Rattling that stops when a hand is placed on the surround.
- Noise that started after the appliance was pushed back in.
- A whirring or ticking fan behind the toe-kick.
- A knock as the appliance starts or stops.
- Not this fault: Nothing running at all is a start fault - read that page.
- Not this fault: A loud appliance that also runs constantly may be a cooling problem.
Most likely causes, in builder-installed order
- Appliance touching the cabinet sides, back or worktop — Why ranked: First on a built-in opening. Contact turns a normal vibration into a drone from the whole run of joinery.
- Not level, or rocking on one foot — Why ranked: Second: a rocking appliance taps its floor on every cycle, and the floor has usually settled since handover.
- Condenser fan behind the toe-kick fouled with dust — Why ranked: Third. It is the only fan most people can reach and it is almost never cleaned on this class of installation.
- Cord, water line or drain pan touching the case — Why ranked: Fourth. A tight opening presses everything behind the appliance against it.
- Compressor or evaporator fan wear — Why ranked: Last, and identified by noise that survives clearance, levelling and a clean fan.
What to check, in order
- Ease the appliance forward slightly and listen again. — Because: If the noise drops away, the cabinet was the amplifier, not the appliance.
- Rock it gently at each front corner. — Because: Any movement means a foot is not carrying weight, and that is a per-cycle tap.
- Pull the toe-kick and look at the fan and the condenser. — Because: This is the accessible fan and it is the one most likely to be fouled.
- Look at where the cord and any water line run behind the appliance. — Because: A line pressed against the case transmits everything the compressor does.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing the toe-kick or any rear panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never put your fingers near a running fan, and get help before moving a full-size appliance in a tight opening. Isolate before reaching behind the toe-kick. Never run the appliance with a grille removed. Do not pack material behind the appliance to damp it - it blocks airflow.
When this becomes a service call
Noise persists with the appliance clear of the cabinet and levelled. There is a metallic scrape or a knock from the compressor. A fan is noisy or does not turn. There is hissing together with a loss of cooling.
