The fan, not the compressor
A DC compressor unit hums quietly and its fan whirrs, so the noise floor is low but not silent. Most complaints on this equipment are the condenser fan - fouled, obstructed, or working hard in a hot locker - rather than the compressor itself.
What you are seeing
- A whirr or tick that comes and goes with the fan.
- A rattle from the locker when the unit runs.
- A hum that has become louder over time.
- A buzz that changes when the locker panel is touched.
- A gurgle after the compressor stops.
- Not this fault: A silent unit that is also warm is a start or cooling fault - read those pages.

Most likely causes, in Dometic order
- Condenser fan blade fouled or obstructed — Why ranked: First on this equipment. Dust, salt and lint unbalance the blade, and anything stored near it will be struck.
- Items stowed against the unit inside the locker — Why ranked: Second: on a boat or in a van, gear moves and ends up against the appliance.
- Unit or locker panel not secured — Why ranked: Third. Vibration from the compressor is transmitted into a loose panel and amplified.
- Fan bearing worn by salt and humidity — Why ranked: Fourth. Marine fans wear faster, and the sound becomes rough rather than simply present.
- Compressor mounts hardened or the compressor becoming noisy — Why ranked: Last, and identified by a hum that has grown steadily rather than one that changed overnight.
What to check, in order
- Note whether the sound tracks the fan or runs continuously with the compressor. — Because: Fan-linked sounds are debris and bearings; continuous ones are the compressor or a panel.
- Open the locker and look for stowed items touching the unit. — Because: On a boat or in a van this is the most common single finding.
- Press on the locker panel and the unit while it runs. — Because: A change in the sound is contact and resonance rather than a failing part.
- Look at the fan blade for salt, dust and lint. — Because: A fouled blade is unbalanced and it ticks or whirrs unevenly.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Isolate at the battery switch before reaching near a DC fan - it starts whenever the compressor calls, without warning. Never reach into a running fan. Do not pack material around the unit to muffle it; it needs that airflow. Secure loose gear in the locker rather than leaving it against the appliance.
When this becomes a service call
A grinding or screeching noise that does not respond to cleaning. A hum that has risen sharply over a short period. A fan that has become rough or stops intermittently. Any noise together with a loss of cooling.
