A lid seals by weight
Many DC units are top-opening boxes with a lid rather than front-opening cabinets with a door, and a lid seals by weight across a large flat rim. Anything proud of that rim holds the whole seal open, which is the most common seal complaint on this equipment.
What you are seeing
- The lid does not sit flush all the way round.
- Heavy frost building on the evaporator plate.
- Condensation on the outside of the box near the rim.
- The lid or door drifts open on a boat under way.
- The cabinet will not hold its set temperature.
- Not this fault: Thin even frost on the plate is normal - read the ice page.
- Not this fault: Water at the bottom of the cabinet is a drain issue.
Most likely causes, in Dometic order
- Contents standing proud of the rim — Why ranked: First on a lid-type box. It is found by looking rather than by testing, and it explains most seal complaints here.
- Seal hardened, flattened or holding salt residue — Why ranked: Second: marine environments leave residue that holds the seal off the rim in one place.
- Box or cabinet distorted where it is installed — Why ranked: Third. A unit fitted into a locker that is not square cannot close evenly however good the seal is.
- Latch or catch not holding under motion — Why ranked: Fourth. On a boat a lid that is not latched will lift with the motion, which is both a seal and a safety problem.
- Hinge worn on a front-opening cabinet — Why ranked: Last, and it shows as a door out of line with the cabinet front.
What to check, in order
- Empty the box and close the lid to see whether it seats evenly. — Because: If it seals perfectly empty, the fault is the packing rather than the appliance.
- Look along the closed lid or door for a gap and note where. — Because: The location separates packing and seal from a distorted installation.
- Run a finger along the whole seal for hardness, flats and residue. — Because: Salt residue and hardening both hold the seal off the rim.
- Check the latch holds the lid down firmly. — Because: On a boat this matters for safety as well as for cooling.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On a boat, an unlatched lid is a hazard under way as well as a cooling problem - never leave it unsecured at sea. Isolate at the battery switch before any DC work. Never wedge a lid or door to close a gap. Support a heavy lid by hand while working inside the box. Rinse salt residue from seals with fresh water rather than leaving it.
When this becomes a service call
The lid does not seat evenly with the box empty and square. The latch will not hold the lid down. The seal is split or has come out of its channel. The cabinet cannot hold temperature with a proven good seal.
