Make the floor safe first
Water from a resident-room refrigerator is a slip hazard before it is an appliance problem, so the first action is to make the area safe and report it. The cause is usually a blocked defrost drain or a door that has been left ajar, and both are correctable without parts.
What you are seeing
- Water on the floor in front of the cabinet.
- Water pooling inside at the bottom of the compartment.
- Ice building on the rear wall inside.
- Damp carpet or flooring under and around the unit.
- Water appearing after the door has been left open.
- Not this fault: A warm compartment with water inside is a cooling fault first - read that page.
- Not this fault: A wet floor with a dry cabinet may be another source entirely.
Most likely causes, in Direct Supply order
- Defrost drain blocked, so melt water runs forward — Why ranked: First on any modern cabinet. Ice at the rear wall together with water at the door is the pattern.
- Door left ajar, so warm room air condenses inside — Why ranked: Second: in a high-traffic room this happens daily, and it produces both frost inside and water at the door.
- Drain pan displaced or overflowing — Why ranked: Third. Compact cabinets have small pans and they are easily knocked out of place when the unit is moved.
- Cabinet tilted forward, so water runs to the door — Why ranked: Fourth. On carpet a slight forward tilt is very easy to end up with.
- Liner or drain fitting damaged — Why ranked: Last, and the only cause here that is not correctable on the spot.
What to check, in order
- Look for ice on the rear wall inside the compartment. — Because: Ice there with water at the door is a blocked defrost drain, which is the leading cause.
- Check whether the door has been closing properly. — Because: An ajar door explains both the frost and the water without any component fault.
- Check the cabinet is level or tilts slightly back. — Because: A forward tilt sends melt water out under the door rather than to the drain.
- Look under the cabinet for a displaced or overflowing pan. — Because: A pan knocked out of place puts water straight onto the floor.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water on a floor in an occupied room is a fall hazard - dry it, mark it, and report it before doing anything else. Never clear a drain with a metal probe that could pierce the liner. Move cabinets with two people and keep the walkway clear. Dry the floor fully before restoring power.
When this becomes a service call
Water returns with a clear drain and a level cabinet. The drain cannot be cleared once the ice has melted. The pan is cracked or cannot be reached. Flooring or carpet has been wet long enough to be damaged.
