Usually no ice maker at all
Compact resident-room refrigerators are rarely plumbed, so on this equipment an ice complaint is usually a small freezer section that has stopped freezing, or frost building where it is not wanted. Both point at the door and the airflow rather than at any ice component.
What you are seeing
- The small freezer section no longer freezes its contents.
- Heavy frost building in the freezer section.
- Ice trays take far longer to freeze than they used to.
- Frost around the freezer flap or door.
- Contents in the freezer section are soft rather than solid.

Most likely causes, in Direct Supply order
- Freezer flap or door not closing — Why ranked: First on this equipment. A small compartment loses its temperature quickly once its own door is not shut, and in a busy room that happens often.
- Frost build blocking the compartment and its airflow — Why ranked: Second: once frost has grown, it insulates and worsens itself, so the compartment gets steadily weaker.
- Main door left ajar, warming the whole cabinet — Why ranked: Third. A freezer section cannot hold if the cabinet around it is being warmed continuously.
- Condenser blocked or no clearance behind the cabinet — Why ranked: Fourth. The freezer section is the first thing to fail when the whole system is short of capacity.
- Thermostat set too warm for the freezer section — Why ranked: Last, and the easiest to correct - a compact cabinet often has one control serving both areas.
What to check, in order
- Check the freezer flap or door closes and sits flat. — Because: A small compartment with its own door ajar cannot hold, and this is the leading cause.
- Look at how much frost has built up in the freezer section. — Because: Heavy frost is both a symptom and a cause, and it needs clearing before anything else is judged.
- Put a thermometer in the freezer section and read it after a day. — Because: Feel is unreliable in a small compartment; a reading is not.
- Check the clearance behind the cabinet and the state of the condenser. — Because: A system short of capacity always loses the freezer section first.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A freezer holds food safely at 0 F (-18 C) or below; in a care setting, frozen food that has softened should be handled under the community food-safety procedure. Never chip frost with a knife - the cooling circuit runs behind those surfaces. Let frost melt rather than forcing it. Never use a heat gun or boiling water inside a compartment. Move cabinets with two people.
When this becomes a service call
The freezer section will not hold with a closed flap and a clear cabinet. Frost returns heavily within days of a defrost. The freezer section cannot reach its safe holding temperature at the coldest setting. The whole cabinet is failing along with the freezer section.
