A ventless dryer runs cool on purpose
This page covers the compact in-room dryers supplied into resident apartments - usually ventless condenser or heat-pump machines in a closet. They dry at a much lower temperature than a vented dryer by design, so a load that feels cool at the end is often normal, and a load that stays wet points at the condenser and the closet air rather than at a heater.
What you are seeing
- Loads finish warm rather than hot and are still damp.
- The cycle runs to the end and the load needs a second run.
- The closet gets very warm during a cycle.
- Drying takes far longer than it used to.
- The machine reports full or complete with a wet load.
- Not this fault: A machine that will not start is a start fault - read the will-not-start page.
- Not this fault: A cycle that stops early is a cycle fault, not a heating fault.
Most likely causes, in Direct Supply order
- Condenser block fouled with lint — Why ranked: First on a ventless machine. This is the part that removes the water, and once it is furred with lint the machine cannot dry however long it runs.
- Closet doors closed with no ventilation — Why ranked: Second: a condenser dryer rejects heat into the room, so a sealed closet warms until the machine can no longer condense anything.
- Lint filters not cleaned - and there is usually more than one — Why ranked: Third. Ventless machines have a door filter and a secondary filter, and residents commonly know about only the first.
- Water tank full, pausing or shortening the cycle — Why ranked: Fourth. Many of these machines stop or curtail the cycle when the tank fills, which reads as a heating failure.
- Heat pump or heating circuit fault — Why ranked: Last, and identified by a machine that tumbles cold from the very start with a clean condenser and an open closet.
What to check, in order
- Open the closet doors and run the same load again. — Because: A condenser dryer needs room air. This is the fastest test on this machine and it costs nothing.
- Find and clean every filter, including the secondary one behind the door filter. — Because: Most residents clean one filter and not the other, and the second is what blocks.
- Check whether the water tank is full or the drain is connected. — Because: A full tank stops or shortens the cycle and looks exactly like poor drying.
- Feel whether the load is warm at the end or completely cold. — Because: Warm and damp is a condensing problem; cold from the start is a heating fault.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A closet dryer must not be run with the doors shut if the manufacturer requires ventilation, and clothing and stored items must be kept clear of the machine. Never run the machine with a filter missing. Do not store items on top of or against a closet dryer. Report a scorched smell immediately and stop using the machine.
When this becomes a service call
The load is cold from the start with clean filters and a clear condenser. Drying stays poor with the closet open, clean filters and a small load. The machine reports complete with a soaking load every time. There is any burning or scorched smell.
