Where the water comes from
Water inside a kimchi refrigerator is usually melt from the compartment walls that has not found the drain, and it collects at the base of the compartment rather than on the floor. On a direct-cooled cabinet that water has a short, easily blocked path, and clearing it is owner work.
What you are seeing
- Water pooling at the base of a compartment.
- Containers sitting in a shallow layer of liquid.
- Water appearing after a mode change from fermenting to storage.
- Water at the base with ice still on the walls above it.
- A brine or kimchi smell in the pooled water.
- Not this fault: Water on the floor around the cabinet is a different path - check for a spilled container first.
- Not this fault: A warm compartment with water inside is a cooling fault first.
Most likely causes, in Dimchae order
- Compartment drain blocked with debris or brine residue — Why ranked: First on this cabinet. Kimchi brine is not plain water, and residue at the drain point sets and blocks it far faster than condensate alone would.
- Frost melting faster than the drain can clear it — Why ranked: Second: a mode change or a warm spell melts the wall frost quickly, and the drain simply cannot keep up.
- A container leaking brine inside the compartment — Why ranked: Third. It is worth excluding early because the fix is nothing to do with the appliance.
- Gasket leaking, so more moisture enters than the design allows — Why ranked: Fourth. More moisture in means more frost and more melt, so the drain is overwhelmed continuously rather than occasionally.
- Cabinet not level, so water runs away from the drain — Why ranked: Last, and easily checked - a slight tilt sends melt to the wrong corner.
What to check, in order
- Taste or smell the pooled liquid rather than assuming it is water. — Because: Brine points at a leaking container, which is not an appliance fault at all.
- Find the drain point at the base of the compartment and check it is clear. — Because: This is the first cause, and it is visible once the compartment is emptied.
- Note whether the water followed a mode change or a warm day. — Because: Timing tied to a thaw is the second cause and it clears itself once the drain is open.
- Check the cabinet sits level with no rock. — Because: A tilt explains water collecting where there is no drain.

- Empty the compartment and mop the pooled liquid out. — N: 1 — Tools: Cloth, sponge — Time: moderate
- Switch the cabinet off and let any wall ice melt fully. — N: 2 — Tools: Towels — Time: one day

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never clear a compartment drain with a metal probe - the cooling circuit runs inside the walls of a direct-cooled cabinet and a puncture ends the appliance. Do not use a heat source to speed up melting. Never lift a lid-type cabinet or move a loaded one alone. Dry the compartment fully before restoring power.
When this becomes a service call
Water returns with a clear drain and a level cabinet. The drain cannot be cleared from inside the compartment. Water is appearing outside the cabinet as well as inside. There is water at the base together with a compartment that no longer cools.
